DANIEL E. NORRIS, OF TIONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ROD-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,155, dated June 13, 1905.
Application filed August 3, 1903. Serial No. 168,127.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itkn own that I, DANIELE. NORRIS, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Tiona, in the county of \Varren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rod-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rod-pullers; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The purpose of this invention is to make a simple device for straining or stretching pull rods, wires, and the like.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, as follows:
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the stretcher; Fig. 2, a plan view of the stretcher. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a section on the line 4 4 in Fig. 2.
A marks the ratchet-bar. At oneend of this bar the clamp A, having the jaws a (0, extends over the bar, the jaws having the opening (f, as indicated by the dotted tracing, for this purpose. The jaws are actuated by the clamping-bolt a and provided with the groove a (see dotted lines) for engaging the rod. The bar has the operating ratchet-teeth a". These are alternately arranged on opposite sides of the bar. The frame B of the stretcher is made up of two parts having connectingbars Z) and 7) and heads o and I)". The heads have the offsets 7)" and If and are secured together by the bolts 0. These bolts have the heads 0, which fit insockets Z) and are provided with nuts 0. In this way the heads are closely secured together, leaving an opening 6' between them for the bar. The offsets relieve the bolts of side strain and keep the bars or parts of the frame in register. The bolts C have the extensions 0, on which are arranged the clamps D. The bolts are provided with the nuts 0 for operating the clamp. The clamp has the groove (Z, and a groove 6 extends along the bar 7). The groove in the clamp provides a surface which tends to hold the rod more securely, and the groove 1) extending across the bar acts to some extent as a guide for the rodin passing from one clamp 1) to the opposite clamp. Arranged between the bars 7) and 7) is the lever E, having the fork E. Extending from each side of the fork and integrally therewith is a trunnion e, which is journaled in the opening 6 in the side bars; The pawls F are secured within the arms of the lever E by the pins f and are drawn toward each other by a spring f.
The operation of this device will be readily apparent from its construction. One part of the rod to be strained is secured in the clamp A and the other in the clamp D. The lever E is operated and the pawls F working alternately upon the ratchet compel the frame to travel along the bar A, and thus strain the rod.
The pawls are provided with the pins f, by which they may be readily opened for releasing the frame.
I/Vhat I claim as new is- 1. In a rod-puller the combination of the ratchet-bar; the separable frame having side bars; and the heads 6 b with the offsets 12* Z2 and having means for securing the heads together; the lever E journaled in said frame; pawls carried by said lever and arranged to operate upon said bar.
2. In a rod-puller the combination of the ratchet-bar; the separable frame B having side bars and the heads 6 b the bolt 0 for securing the bars of said heads together, said bolts having a head adapted to engage the frame and the extensions C; the clamps arranged on said extensions; the lever E carried by the frame, and the pawls carried by the lever and arranged to operate upon the bar.
3. In a rod-puller, the combination with the ratchet-bar; a frame by which said bar operates; a lever on said frame; pawls carried by said lever and arranged to operate upon said bar; the clamps D secured to said frame, said frame having the guiding-groove I) along the face thereof extending between the clamps.
4. In a rod-puller, the combination with the ratchet-bar A carrying a clamp A; the separable frame B having the side bars Z) and I) with opening therein, and heads 6 7/ having the offsets 6* and b thereon; the bolts C having the heads 0 arranged in the sockets b in the frame; the extension C on said bolts; the clamps D carried by said extensions, said clamps being provided with the grooves (Z and the frame with the groove 6 for extending I In testimony WhereofIhave hereunto setmy between the clamps; the lever E having the hand in the presence of two subscribing wit- IO for]: E and integral trunnions e journaied in nesses.
