Description
P. MINNICH & C. LOHNES.
Belt-Clamps.
Patentad Feb. 10,1874.-
UNITED STATES PATENT .OEEIcE PETER MINNIOH AND CONRAD LOHNES, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BELT-CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,419, dated February 10, 1874; application filed October 28, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PETER Mrnnron and CONRAD LOHNES, of Springfield, in the county of Clarke and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Belt-Clamps;
tion. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same, showing the construction of the ratchet for working the tightening-screws.
The object of this invention is to clamp and draw together the ends of a belt, and hold the same while being laced or otherwise joined; and it consists, first, in the method of operat ing simultaneously the clamping-screws; second, in the manner of mounting the clamping eccentrics, so as to admit of ready attachment and detachment of the belt; third, in the relative arrangement of the parts, whereby the tightening-screws are caused to operate in the plane of the belt.
That others may fully understand our invention, we will particularly describe it.
A A are the end bars, connected by the right-and-left-hand screw-rods B B, so that the revolution of said screws will cause said bars A A to approach or recede, as the case may be. Beneath each of the bars A there is a clamping device to seize and hold the end of the belt, and for this purpose we think it most convenient to employ eccentric rollers G O. A ratchet, D, is placed upon each of the screws B at or about its center, and also a lever, E,
. located over said ratchet, and provided with a reversing-pawl, F, so that said lever may be caused to actuate said ratchet in either direction desired. A connecting-rod, G, is pivoted at either end to the extremities of the levers E, so that they are caused to move simultaneously in the same direction, and actuate equally the two ends of each of the bars A. A handle, H, may be placed upon the connectin g-bar Gr to facilitate its movement. The clamping-roller O has its end bearings in two boxes, I J, the former of which is pivoted to the bar A at one end, and the latter of which is arranged to slide and engage with a hooked end, a, of the bar A, so that it may be readily detached therefrom for the removal of the apparatus-from the belt after the same has been laced.
The clamping-roller C may be rotated by means of a crank, c, or other convenient means.
By employing the bars A and clampingrollers 0, arranged relatively as described, we are enabled to place the screws B B at the ends of the bars A, and in the plane of the belt, so' that when in operation the draft will be straight, and without tendency either to spring the screws or bend the ends of the belt.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new is- In combination with the clamp-bars A A and their attached clamping devices, the tightening-screws B B, ratchets l), pawls F, and levers E, connected by rod G, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
