SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,608, dated June 6, 1905.
4 j Application filed June 16,V 1904.. Serial No. 212,838.
To all ull/1,0m t may con/cern.:
lBe it known that we, PAUL S. BUTTER- WORTH, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico, and STEPHEN FARRAR HART, residing at Ashland, in the county of Hanover, State of Virginia, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Stamp, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates more particularly to hand-stamps carrying a plurality of designations or names any of which can be brought into proper position for marking purposes The object is to provide a very simple and novel structure of the above character which can be easily understood and operated and in which the arrangement of the names or designations can be varied as often as necessary with ease and expedition. A
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, v
wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the stamp. Fig. 2 is avertical longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 svacross-sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the toothed wheel. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the namecarrying plates. y
Similar reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the embodiment illustrated a frame is provided comprising a back plate 6, having at its ends depending ears 7. A handle 8, located upon the back plate 6, is secured thereto by a suitable fastener 9, passing through said plate 6 into the lower end of the handle.-
A head 10 is revolubly mounted in the frame, being located beneath the back plate 6 and between the ears 7. The head is journaled to the ears by means of headed pins or gudgeons`r stantially in the form of dovetails-that is to say, their inner portions are wider than their outer sides. The seats receive the looped portions 13 of doubled strips extending the ,length of the head and having their outer K strips that are located in the seats, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Name-carrying plates 16 are slidably fitted in the guideways thus formed and are detachable therefrom, said plates carrying the usual rubber stamps'l?. For the purpose of normally holding the head against rotation a toothed wheel 18 is employed, -that is attached to one end of the head, the teeth 19 thereof projecting beyond the annular face of said head.
A spring-holding dog 20, located in a substantially horizontal position upon the back plate 6, has one end disposed beneath the handle 8 and secured by the fastener 9. The other end portion is doubled outwardly, as shown at 21, to form a thumb-piece and depends as illustrated at 22, the free terminal being inturned to'form a nib 23, said nib passing through and slidably engaging in a slot 24, formed in the adjacent ear, and, furthermore, detachably engaging between the teeth 19 of the wheel. The ends of the namecarrying plates 16 are preferably provided with seats 25, that are alined with the spaces between the teeth 19, and thus permit the nib to properly engage the wheel.
The manner of using this device, it is thought, will be clearly evident. The names or designations are made inthe usual manner of rubber and are fastened upon the plates 16. These plates are then slipped into the guideways and can be arranged in any sequence desired. The name or designation which it is desired to use is placed lowermost, and this can be accomplished by raising the latch or dog and revolving the head. When in proper position, the dog is permitted to engage between the teeth, thus holding the head against revolution upon the-frame.
parent to those skilled in the art without fur,-V ther description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may. be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of .theadivantages of the inven. tion.
Having thus described our invention, what` we claim asnew, and desire to secure by Let-v ters Patent, is-
l. In a stamping device, the combination` With a frame comprising a back plate having,
depending ears, 'of a handle projecting from the back plate and located on the side opposite. the ears,ra head -journaled to and between the ears and having a radial series of teeth, and a spring holding-dog mounted on thevside of the back plate having the handle and provided with a terminal tooth that extends through the. frame and coaets with the teeth of the head toL hold said head against rotation.
2.A In a stamping device, the combination..
with a frame, of a revoluble headjournaledon the frame and having longitudinally-disposed spaced grooves forming-seats, spacedl doubledstrips fitted in the seats and extending longitudinally of the head, said strips each :having outwardly-extending ,offset longitudinal margins that overlie the head, the adjacent margins of the adjacent strips .having their edges spaced apart and forming longitudinally-disf- It will therefore" be apparent that this device `is a convenient posed guideways between them, and plates detachably -fitted in said guideways upon the heads.
3. In a stamping device, the combination with a frame, of a revoluble head journaled on the frame and having spaced seats, spaced doubled strips -iitted in the seats and having outwardly-extending offset free margins located over the face of the head the adjacent margins of the adjacent strips being spaced apart and forming guideway's between them, and plates detachably fitted in said guideways.
4L. In astamping device, the combination with a frame, of a revoluble head journaled on the` frame Vand having spaced seats, looped strips fitted in the seats and having oppositelyextending olset free margins located over the face ofthe head forming guideways, and holding-keys tted longitudinally. in the loops of the strips.-
5. `In a stamping device, th'e combination with a frame, of a handle secured-to the frame,
a revolublefhead` journaled in the frame and.
tion provided with an inwardly-extending free terminaLsaid. terminal having a vsliding; en-
gagement fwiththetrame `and detachably en-` gaging theiteeth of the wheel to hold the head againstrevol-u-tion. i
In testimony that .we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto aflixed our signatures f in thepresence of two witnesses,l
