SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,049, dated May 30, 1905.

To all whom it party concern.-

Be it known that I, PURNELL W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing atPhiladelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cigar-Cutters and Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates .to a new and useful improvement in cigar-cutters and advertising devices, and has for its object to provide a cigarcutter consisting of a hollow casing preferaby formed in the shape of a bottle, said hollow casing being cut away at a certain point and a cylinder journaled within the casing opposite this cut-away portion, advertisements being represented upon the outer surface of said cylinder, said cylinder being revolved each time a movable plug is pressed downward, and an opening is formed through the casing through which the end of a cigar may be thrust, a knife upon the inside of the casing crossing said opening to sever the end from the cigar each time the movable plug is depressed.

WVith these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through my improved device, showing the same in its normal position; Fig. 2, a similar view to Fig. 1, showing the plug depressed; Fig. 3, a crosssection taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

A represents the casing, which may be made in any shape desired; but in the drawings it is shown in the shape to represent a bottle. Said casing is hollow, and the wall of the casing is cut away, so as to form an opening A near the lower end thereof.

B is a vertical shaft journaled at its lower end in the bearing, extending upward from the cross-piece D, connected with the casing, the upper end of the shaft passing through and beingjournaled in another cross-piece D connected to the casing.

E is a cylinder journaled loosely upon the vertical shaft B and being provided with a horizontal partition E.

F is a screw having a high-pitch thread which is secured to the upper end of the shaft B and extends above the cross-piece D G is a button or plug normally extending beyond the upper end of the casing and adapted to slide vertically therein.

G is a rod secured in the lower end of the plug G and extending downward to the interior of the casing. A spring G being interposed between the casing and the plug serves to hold the plug normally upward.

H is a nut secured upon the lower end of the rod G and threaded upon the screw F.

I is a disk having teeth I formed upon its periphery, said disk being secured upon the shaft D just above the horizontal partition E of the cylinder.

J is a spring-pawl pivoted upon the partition E and bearing against the periphery of the disk I.

K is a pawl pivoted upon the cross-piece D and normally engaginga notch K, formed in the upper edge of the cylinder E.

In operation when the plug Gr is depressed the shaft D will be revolved through the agency of the nut H and screw F, and the disk I will be also revolved, the teeth I springing past the pawl J, the cylinder in the meanwhile being held against revolution by the pawl or latch K. When the nut H has reached its lowest position, it will strike the heel end of the pawl or latch K and release said pawl or latch from engagement with the cylinder. Then as the plunger is raised by the spring G the shaft B will be revolved in the opposite direction, and the teeth I of the disk I then coming in engagement with the pawl J will revolve the cylinder E, for the latch K will be held raised a sufficient time to allow the notch K to pass out of alinement with the latch K.

L is an opening formed through the side of the casing, through which a cigar end may be thrust, and M is a spring-knife carried by the plunger G, adapted to bear against the inner surface of the casing and pass the op'ening L when the plunger is depressed for the purpose of severing the end from the cigar.

The plunger G is prevented from revolving on account of the spring-knife contacting the flat inner surface of the casing, through which the opening L is formed.

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. In a device of the character described, a casing, a portion of said casing being cut away, a vertical shaft journaled in the casing, a cylinder journaled loosely upon said shaft opposite the cut-away portion, a ratchet-wheel secured to the shaft, a pawl pivoted upon the cylinder in engagement with the ratchet-wheel, a high-pitch screw extending upward from the shaft, a plunger, a spring for normally raising said plunger, a nut secured upon the lower end of the plunger and threaded upon the screw, the thread of said screw being cut in such a direction that when the plunger, is depressed the teeth of the ratchet-wheel may spring past the pawl, a retaining-pawl norrnally engaging notches in the upper edge of the cylinder, the nut adapted to strike the heel end of said pawl and raise the same when the plunger is depressed, the casing being provided with an opening through its side, and a spring-knife carried by the plunger adapted to pass said opening, and form a cigarcutter, and at the same time provide means to prevent the rotation of the plunger as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a device of the character described, a hollow casing, a portion of which is cut away to form an opening, acylinder journaled within the casing opposite said opening, a springactuated plunger, a vertical shaft, means for revolving said vertical shaft when the plunger is depressed, means for holding the cylinder against revolution when the plunger is depressed, means for unlocking the cylinder when the plunger has reached its lowest position, means for revolving the cylinder a predetermined distance when the plunger is raised, the casin g being provided with an opening formed through its side through which cigar-tips may be inserted, and a knife carried by the plunger adapted to pass said opening upon the inside when the plunger is operated, and to act as a cigar-cutter and also to prevent the rotation of the plunger, as and for the purpose specified.

3. Ina device of the character described, a hollow casing formed in the shape of a bottle, said casing being cut away at the lower portion to form a side opening, a vertical shaft journaled in the casing, a cylinder journaled in the casing to move independently. of said shaft, aspring-actuated plunger, means for revolving said shaft in one direction when the plunger is depressed and in the opposite direction when the plunger is raised, a ratchetwheel secured to the shaft, a pawl pivoted to the cylinder and held in spring engagement with the ratchet-wheel,the teeth of the ratchetwheel being so set. that the cylinder will not be revolved when the plunger is depressed, a latch pivoted to the casing and normally engaging a notch formed in the upper end of the cylinder, said latch adapted to be raised when the plunger reaches its lowermost posi: tion, an opening formed through the-side of the casing through which a cigar-tip may be inserted, and a knife carried by the plunger adapted to cross said opening when the plunger is operated, and to act as a cigar-cutter and also to prevent the rotationof the plunger, as specified.
