STAMP-DELIVERING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1215.
Application filed July 29, 1914. Serial No. 853,988.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE Wns'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keystone, in the county of Wells and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stamp-Delivering Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a delivery machine, and more particularly to the class of stamp delivering machines.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this character wherein postage or other stamps in tape form will be conveyed therefrom and the exact number of stamps delivered can be ascertained on viewing the tally mechanism of the machine.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this character wherein the stamps in tape form are supported upon reels within the machine and are emitted in a novel form so that an accurate account of the number of stamps delivered can be had, the feed mechanism. for the stamps being novel and readily and easily operated.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and eflicient in operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
1n the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a machine constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, with the cover or lid removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the machine comprises a casing A in which is arranged a frame 10 having a swell front 11 and a projected base ledge 12 above which are ejected the stamps when delivered from the machine in a manner presently described. Formed in opposlte sides of the frame 10 near the front thereof are forwardly inclined elongated guideways or charge opening 19 in the front of the frame thereof. Fixed to the spindle ends 16 of the uppermost roller are knurled hand knobs 20 which permit the rotation of the said roller, while connected to the spindle ends of both, feed rollers 16 at the inner ends thereof are meshing gears 21, so that on rotating the uppermost feed roller 16 similar motion will be imparted to the lowermost feed roller.
Arranged within the casing rearwardly of the feed rollers 16 are spaced vertical partitions 22 forming independent reel compartments 23 in which are arranged the stamp reels 2 1 which have their supporting spindles 25 detachably engaged in substantially V-shaped seats 26 formed on the partitions 23 and frame, and upon these reels 24: are normally wound the stamps in tape form, the same being trained between the feed rollers 16 so that on the rotation thereof they will be ejected from the machine.
Rising from the base or bottom of the case A slightly rearwardly of the gears 21 are bearings 27 in which are pivoted rocking catches 28, the latter adapted to engage the lowermost gears 21 for locking the same against movement. the catches being held in locked position through the medium of springs 29 connected tiereto and to the frame, the said catches 28 being formed with extensions 30 which are engaged in the slotted end 31 of a release rod 32 mounted for sliding movement in a guide 33 supported at the front of the casing A interiorly thereof. The rod 32 is formed with a hool shaped upper end forming a finger grip so that it can be lifted for disengaging the catches 28 from the lowermost gears 21 so that the feed rollers can be operated. This rod 32 has therein a niche forming a stop shoulder 35 Whichis adapted to engage in a notch 36 formed in the guide 33 so as to hold the rod 32 elevated to sustain the catches 28 in released position. Connected to the rod 32 is a coiled retractile spring 37 which is also connected to the bottom or base of the casing A, the spring being de signed to lower the rod when released.
Mounted on each side of the frame 10 interiorly of the casing A are independent series of peripherally toothed tally wheels 38, 39 and 40 which are adapted to rotate on stud axles 41, the wheels 39 and 40 being formed with an extended tooth 42 so that .on the complete rotation of the wheel 40 the ner presently described.
- Fixed to the outer spindle ends of the uppermost rollers 16 are substantially triangular-shaped tripping members 43, the pointed ends of which work in the path of the teeth of the wheel 40 so that on the turning of the feed rollers the said tally wheel 40 will be successively operated, while arranged beneath themembers 43 on the base or bottom of the casing A are bearings 44 in which are pivotedtrip arms 45 actuated by the points of the members 43, and to these arms are connected rods 46 which are also connected to bell clapperarms 47 pivoted in bearings 48 onthe base or bottom of the said casing, the clappers being designed to strike bells 49 mounted on the sides of they frame, the clappers being tensioned by means of coiled retractilev springs 50 which are also connected to the rear end of the casing. The bell49 is sounded when each stamp is ejected from the machine between the feed rollers, the latter being manually rotated by gripping the knobs 20, as will be clearly apparent.
The casing has at its top a hinged lid or'cover 51, while in the front wall is mounted a lock 52 which is adapted to fasten the cover closed. The rod 32 can only be operated when the cover or lid 51 is raised for the opening of the casing at the top thereof.
Mounted in the lid 12 at the front of the casing A are moisture pads 53 so that the stamps when separated can be moistened for the softening of the mucilage at one side of the stamps.
The reels 24 are each formed in two sections so that tape in stamp form can be mounted thereon when in a roll, and thereafter the reel positioned within the machine.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1. A deviceof the kind described comprising a base plate a casing mounted on said base-plate, said casing having stamp ejecting slots, means in said casing designed to eject stamps, said means including gear wheels, a vertical guide in said casing, a securable cover on said casing, a slide arranged in said guide, a handle on said slide, a spring normally holding said handle directly under said cover and a spring pressed pawl lever in said casing and engaging one of said gears to lock it, said slide adapted to operate said locking pawl.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a casing, said casing having stamp ejecting slots, stamp feeding mechanism arranged in said casing, a vertical guide arranged insaid casing, a securable cover on said casing, a slide operating in said guide, a stop. shoulder formed at the upper end of said guide, a shoulder on said slide arranged to engage said stop whereby to support said slide, means arranged to throw said mechanism out of operation, means controlled by said slide for actuating said last-named means, and a handle on said slide normally disposed under said cover.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. CLARENCE EST. ll itnesses A. R. TEAGLE, N. S. HAECKER.
