VENDING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,149, dated November 20, 1888.

To all whom it may concern:
lle it known that I, HENRYGATES, ol' Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Vending Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to apparatus for retaliing or delivering articles or goods in exchange for coin, and has for its object to provide a machine of this character which will be simple of construction and easy and accurate of operation, it being rendered impossible to work the same by means of a coin of a denomination other than that arranged for.
My invention is embodied in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my apparatus complete. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line :v .cof Fig. 2, part of the lower casing of cabinet being broken away, showing the interior. Fig. 4 is a disassembled view of the parts through which the coin passes. Fig. 5 is a view in detail, showing the lower end of one of the magazinetubcs. Fig. 6 is adetailed view of the slide or drawer. Fig. 7 is a View iu perspective of a weight block working within the magazine-tubes.
In the drawings, A represents a cabinet composed of the base or lower part, a, and the upper portion, a. .Iournaled in the top and bottom of this cabinet and passing centrallythrough the same is a shaft, B, which carries the rotating magazine O,containing the supply of goods to be delivered to the drawer.
The magazine is made up of a number of vertical tubes, D, into which the goods made up in packages are placed, and from which Serial 510.218,56?. (No model.)
ture a2 for that purpose. For working the magazine in this manner, I have provided on the front of cabinet A, a dial, E, having labels or inscriptions to correspond with those on the tubes D. By turning the hand ete the desired class of goods indicated on dial E, the tube containing the class of goods corresponding is brought to position over the drawer. The hand e is mounted on the spindle F and on the other end of said spindle bevel-gear f is mounted, which meshes with bevel-gear b on shaft B, thus giving the necessary rotary motion to the magazine C. After filling the tubes D with packages, the bottom one of which rests on inwardly-projccting ears d', I place on top of the column a weight-block, G, having a T-shaped projection, g', on which is inscribed the word Empty This projection g works on the outside of the tubes D, so that when the supplyof packages in the tubes D becomes low the weight-block G will descend to a position in alignment with the aperture azof the cabinet, and the word Empty on the projection g thereof will show through, so that the magazine may be replenished through the hinged panel in the cabinet. (Shown in Fig. l.)
II is the delivery drawer or slide, provided with projecting blocks orlugshh. Interposed between this drawer I-I and a central slat in the cabinet is a spiral spring, I, for forcing the drawer out when the same has been released. Vhen the drawerH is in a closed position,one
end of a bent lever, J, will set in between the lugs h h. This bent lever is secured by staples a3 to the base of cabinet A, and has a dip or half-round bend, j, so that it will come below the plane of rotation of the magazine O. On one end of the lever .I there is a small depending lug, j.
Working in the base of cabinet and to one side of the drawer Ii is a slide, K, having a slot, 7c, and forced out by a spiral spring, 7c', seated between thesaid slide K anda central slat in base of cabinet. The slide K works on and over a short bar, L, secured to the cabinet A, and said bar L has a slot, l, of a size to correspond with the slot 7tin the slide K. When the slide K is in its normal position out from the front wall of the cabinet A, the slot Z in the bar L is in the rear ofit; but when the slide v K is pushed in against the spring k the slots 7c and Z register, and both being of a size to admit a coin of the proper denomination the coin passes fully through the same.
M is a lever having a fulcruln in a bracket, N, and having an L-shaped arm, m, which carries a balance-weight, O, and a pawl, P. On the other end of the lever M there is a head, m', having a concave depression therein, into which the coin fits after passing through the slots 7c and Z. The coin being of a weightsuiiicient to overcome the balance-weight O on the other end of the .lever M,the said lever is tilted and descends to an inclination which dislodges the coin from the depression in the head m',
. and it is thrown on the floor of the cabinet. Y The lever M being free of the coin, the weight O carries the said lever back to its normalposition, and in so doing the pawl P engages a toothed whecl,Q,secured to the end of a roller, R,journaled in bracketsin therearof the cabinet A.A
In the upper part, a', of the cabinet A there is hung in suitable brackets a roller, S, over which and the roller Q an endless ribbon, T, passes. On the ribbon T is printed advertisements, choice extracts from well-known authors, or other reading-matter that may be found to be of interest to the general public. This reading-matter on the ribbon will show through an open panel, U, in the cabinet A.
The operation is as follows: The purchaser turns the hand c on the dial E to the desired class of goods, this bringing the corresponding tube, D, of the magazine in position directly above the drawer H, which is in the cabinet A, while the slide K is out from the cabinet. The proper coin is now dropped into the slot marked CoinJ It passes throughv slot 7c in the slide K, and rests on the bar L, immediately in advance ofthe slot Z. The coin having a diameter greater than the thickness of the slide K, it projects from the upper face of slide just in front of the lug j of the bent lever J. 'The slide K is now pushed in toward the cabinet, which movement causes the coin to first strike the lug j of the lever K, giving the same a rotation sufficient to throw the other end up from its seat between the lugs h "and 7L of the drawer H, releasing the drawer and allowing the spring 7c to move the drawerA H outward, the lug h carrying the bottom package off the ears d and through the open front of the tube D, and as the delivery-drawer projects its full length the package can be removed. The slide K being released by the purchaser, the spring 7c throws it out to the initial position. The drawer at the same time must be pushed in, when the end of lever J will ride up the beveled face of lug h to its seat between the lugs h and h', thus locking the drawer again. After the coin has passed through slots k and Z, it lodges in the depression in the head 'm' of the lever M, tilting the same to an inclination sufficient to throw the coin to the ioor below. The lever M being relieved of the coin, the weight O returns said level' to its horizontal position, which movement causes the pawl P to engage the toothed wheel or the roller R and turns the same, thus giving the ribbon T a movement and displaying a new reading.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a vending apparatus, the combination,
with tube D, having at the bottom inwardlyprojecting ears d, and notched, as shown, of the drawer H, having lugs h and 7L', the spring I, tending to push the drawer out, the slotted slide K and its spring 7c', and the bent lever J, having its ends bent, as shown, to enable it to come into contact with the lug h and to be relieved therefrom by the slide when a coin is inserted in the slot in said slide, all as hereinbefore described.
