IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR-ALARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,00A, dated March 24, 1874; application filed January I2, 187i.
CASI: B.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. THORP, of Chicago, inthe county of (look and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarm; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of burglar-alarms in which a clock-work is arranged upon a base having a downward-projecting iianged base, and upon which is an upright post with the bell or gong secured thereto; and the nature of my invention consists in combining with such alarm certain devices for operating the alarm and lighting a candle, which devices, when the alarm is not in use, can be folded under and within the iianged base, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a burglaralarm embodying my invention, and showing it set ready for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, showing it folded.
H represents a circular base of any suitable dimensions, formed or provided with a circumferential iiange, h, projecting downward for a sufficient distance. On top of the base H is secured a clockwork, I, with a central upright post, 1'., on the top of which the bell or gong A is secured. B represents the detent of the clock-work I arranged to extend beyond the bell and base, as shown in the drawing. At the same side of the alarm as the detent B, to the lower edge ofthe fiange h, is hinged an arm, (l, provided, at its outer end on the under side, with a spring or spring-plate, D. The outer end of the arm Gis forked, and in the same is pivoted a lever, E, having a beveled projection, a, at its hinged end to be operated upon by the spring-plate D. Near the outer end, on the under side of the lever E, are two pointed teeth, b b, and on the same side of the lever, inward from the teeth, is fastened a spring, d, to hold a match. On the arm G, near the inner end, is a flange, f, to hold a Ypiece of candle which rests on said arm. To
the flange h is also hinged an arm, G, provided with a roughened surface, c, on its inner sides, near the outer end. i
The alarm is to be placed on the floor, with the arm G also resting thereon and pointing toward the door. The lever E is placed in an inclined position, pointing toward and close'to the door, the spring-plate D bearing against the point of the projection a, holding the lever in this position.
When the door is opened, as soon as it commences to move inward it strikes the lever E, so as to bring it off the point at which it was held. The spring D then operating against the beveled surface of the projection a, throws the lever inward and downward with great force, the end of the lever striking on top of the projecting arm or end of the detent B, releasing the same and sounding the alarm. During the downward movement of the lever E the match held by the spring d is ignited by sudden contact with the roughened surface e of the arm G, and the ignited match brought down to the wick of the candle, lighting the same.
In operating the alarm after it has been sounded, the teeth b b pass down into the door, preventing the alarm from being pushed out of the way by the opening of the door, and form a stop to prevent the door from being' opened.
When the alarm is not in use, the arms C G and lever E are folded under the base H, within the base h, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to be out of the way, and that the whole alarm can be put away without taking up any more room than that occupied by the base.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a burglaralarm comi 2- menor posed of Juhe base H, with circumferential In testimony that I claim Jche foregoing I llange h, clock-Work I, central post a, bell or have hereunto set my hand Jr-his lst (lay of gong A, and detent B, of the hinged arni C, October, 1873.
spring-plate D, lever E, having projection a,
teeth b b, and match-holder d, and the hinged JAMLS HARNX THORP' arnl G, with rougllened surface e, all eon- IViinesses: structed substantially as and for the purposes DANIEL LAWRANCE,
herein set forth. GEO. H. BURRoWsd
