To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLIFFORD B. PACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Madison and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Door- Bells and Burglar-Alarms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to combined door bell and burglar alarm and has for its object to provide certain new and useful improvements over my U. S. patent issued to me on March 31st 1903, No. 723,908.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bell connected to and operated by a door knob in which the bell is sounded upon the rotation of the door knob in either direction and in which means are provided for preventing a sounding of the bell when the door knob is returned to its normal position, thus preventing the unnecessary ringing of the bell, as it has been found in practice that the ringing of the bell upon the return movement of the door knob to its normal position is entirely unnecessary and under certain conditions may be annoying and disadvantageous.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient mechanism for operating the bell by connecting the same so as to be operated by a rotation of the door knob.
WVith these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction of the operating mechanism of the bell; and the invention further consists in means for preventing the ringing of the bell upon the return movement of the door knob to its normal position.
The invention further consists in the novel construction for effectually preventing the ringing of the bell upon movement of the door knob in either direction so as to entirely disconnect the operating mechanism so that the clapper of the bell .will not be actuated.
The invention further consists in certain other novel details of construction and in combinations of parts, all of which will be first fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating the mechanism of the combined bell and burglar alarm, the hell. or gong being removed. Fig. 2 is an elevation illustrating in full lines the throw-out lever in operative position. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the construction for preventing ringing of the bell during the return movement of the door knob to its normal position. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the gong and perating mechanism, and F ig. 5 is a transverse sectional view through the crank carried on the door knob stalt.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures in which;
1 indicates the bell mounted on a post 2 secured conveniently to a plate 3. Pivoted to the plate 3 at the point 4: is the lever 5 carrying a pawl 6 pivoted to the lever 5 at the point 7, said pawl 6 being provided at one end with a rounded point 8 and at its other end with two depressions 9 adapted to engage a post or stop 10 mounted on the lever 5.
Pivoted to the plate 3 at the point 11 is a lever 12 carrying the clapper 13, said lever 12 normally engaging the lever 5 and is heldv in proper relative position by means of a coil spring 14 connected to a washer 15 mounted on the bell post 2. Likewise mounted on the bell post 2 is the substantially semicircular rack member 16 having a succession of teeth 17 which engage the rounded end, 8 of the pawl 6 in the manner as illustrated in Fig. 1, while a lever arm 18 preferably formed integral with the rack member 16 extends horizontally ot the bell and is connected at 19 to a connecting link 20 passing to the 'crank 21 and connected thereto at the point 22, said crank 21 being provided with a rectangular opening 23 and a boss or hub 24; (Fig. 5) to agree with the shape and form of the door knob staff 25, the boss or hub 24; providing a long hearing for the crank 21 thereby preventing wabbling oi the same and effecting a tight arrangement of the door knob and staff, the position of the door knob being illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Mounted on the bell post 2 below the toothed member 16 is a pivoted lever or member 26 having a flat end 27 which as shown in Fig. 1 acts as a stop for the pivoted lever 5, the opposite end 28 of the member 26 being provided at its two corners with upturned lugs 29, the lever arm 18 of the toothed member 16 operating on top of the pivoted member 26 and between the two upturned lugs 29, the said lugs being arranged in the path of movement of the said lever arm 18 as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Mounted on the bell post 2 and below the member 26 is the throw-out lever 30 'pro-' downwardly according to the direction of movement of the door knob. This movement of the crank 21 is communicated to the toothed element 16 and as the pawl 6 on the pivoted lever 5 is normally in engagement with the toothed perforation of the said element 16 rotation of the said element 16 will impart a reciprocating movement to the said lever 5 whichreciprocating movement will be imparted to the pivoted lever 12 and will cause the clapper 18 to oscillate and strike the bell or gong to sound the same. As the door knob reaches the end of its rotation in one direction the lever 18 on the toothed element 16 engages one of the upturned bosses 29 on the pivoted member 26 in the manner as shown in Fig. 3, thus rotating the pivoted member 26 and causing'one corner of its edge 27 to engage the pivoted lever 5 and move the same into position shown in Fig. 3' thus carrying the pivoted pawl 6 out of engagement with the toothed member 16. As the door knob returns to its normal position the direction of movement of the toothed member 16 is reversed and said toothed member rotates without engaging the pivoted pawl 6 to further sound the bell and as the door knob reaches the end of its return movement the lever 18 on the toothed member 16 engages the other of the upturned lugs 29 rotating the same and cansing the flat edge 27 to assume its normal position as shown in Fig. 1, thus again bringing the pivoted pawl 6 into engagement with the toothed perforation of the toothed member '16.
It will be clearly seen from an inspection of this construction that the bell is sounded upon movement of the door knob in either direction and is not sounded upon the return of the door knob to its normal position thus preventing an undue and unnecessary sounding of the bell.
At times it is necessary and particularly during the day to throw the bell out of connection in such manner that the opening andclosing of the door by means of rotating the bell will not sound the bell and consequently I provide on the bell post 2 a pivoted throwout lever 30, which can be thrown into position in full lines in Fig. 2 in order to cause the lower corner of the edge 32 to engage the pivoted lever 5 to throw the same into position shown in Fig. 2 thus allowing the toothed member '16 to freely rotate in either directionwithout communicating any oscillating movement to the clapper 13.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A combined door bell and burglar alarm comprising a crank arranged on the door knob staff of a door and rotatable therewith, a bell, mechanism for sounding the same, said mechanism comprising a toothed element pivoted centrally of the bell, a lever arm connected to said toothed element, a link connecting said lever arm with said crank on the door knob staff, a lever equipped with a pivoted pawl adapted for engagement with said toothedelement, a second lever operated by said first-referred to lever, a bell-clapper carried by said second lever, said toothed element being adapted to oscillate said twolevers to actuate the said clapper, an element pivoted centrally of the bell having a flat edge to form a stop for the said pawl-equipped lever, means on said pivoted element for engagementwith the said toothed elementlever arm to cause the said pivoted element to engage the said pawl equipped lever to take its pawl out of engagement with the said toothed element said toothed element then being free to be moved without engaging the said pawl to prevent the'actuation of said clapper, and a stop lever pivoted centrally of the said bell and arranged to engage thesaid pawl-equipped lever to force the said pawl out of engage ment with the said toothedelement whereby said toothed element is free to movein either direction without engaging the saidpawl,

said toothed member then being free to be moved without engaging the pawl to prevent the actuation of said bell-clapper.
