DENOMINATING APPARATUS.

Coon, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of Hollis, in the county of Queens and State of New York, and Jos'nrn LEVINE, a citizen of Russia, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Denominating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an apparatus for the use of paymasters for denominating currency for payrolls, or for other purposes, and has for its objects to improve certain details of construction whereby the device will be cheap to construct, easy to assemble, will. not easily get out of order, and which will be easy to repair.
These and other objects will more fully appear in the following specification and accompanying drawings considered together or separately.
The invention is illustrated in the accon1- panying drawings, in which like parts in all of the several figures are designated by similar characters of reference, and in which I Fig. 1 is a plan view partly in section of an apparatus embodying the invention.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated the apparatus comprises a base 1 on which is mounted a frame comprising a strip of sheet metal 2 having its ends 8 bent up at right angles to form hearings. Between the ends 3 are sheet metal standards elriveted or otherwise secured to the member 2. Each of the ends 3 and standards 4. is provided with a U-shaped notch 53 in its upper surface, and such notches are in aline ment and form bearings for a shaft 6 which extends longitudinally of the frame.

The discs are loosely mounted on the shaft 6 and each group is positioned from each other group, and the end groups from the ends of the shaft, by a collar 11. The collars engage within the notches 5 and form bearings for the shaft 6. Each of the ratchets of the units and tens discs of each group is provided with a deep tooth 12, and coacting with each group is a spring pressed pawl having three teeth 13, let and 15 of gradually decreasing length and cooperating respectively with the ratchets of the discs 7, 8 and 9.
The pawl is pivoted in an open rectangular frame 16, there being a separate frame surrounding each group of discs. The frames 16 are separated by the standards 4., and all of said frames are pivoted on a rod 17 which extends longitudinally of the apparatus and through the ends 3 and standards 4. At the end of the frame 16 opposite the pivoted point a spring 18 carried in a socket in the base tends to hold the frame L6 in. engagement with the lower sides of the collar on each side of the disc group.
Cooperation with each frame and in alinement with the spring 18 is a rod 19 which projects upward through a non-circular opening is a casing 20. The rod 19 is noncircular in cross section and is not secured to the frame 16 but rests thereon. Each rod is provided with a button 21, outside of the casing and each button carries a designer tion indicating the value of the disc group with which it cooperates. Each rod is guided in the frame as shown at 22, and the lower end of the rod is burred whereby the same may not be withdrawn from the casing.
When the rod cooperating with the disc group, for example, is depressed the tooth will rotate the units dis-c one tooth when the pressure on the button is released. WVhen the deep tooth of the disc 7 is positioned to be engaged by the tooth 13 the tooth 14 will be brought into engagement with the ratchet of the disc 8 and the disc 8 will be rotated one step for each complete rotation of the disc '7 and similarly the disc 19 will be rotated one step for each complete rotation of the disc 8.

Each pawl 22 has an arm 2% and. each arm attached to frame 16 of its group by means of a helical spring 25.
@ne side of the member 2 is turned up as shown at 26 and said turned. up portion is provided with a plurality of slots, and the arm 24- of each pawl 22 engages one of said slots whereby the pawls are properly spaced to engage the ratcliets of the discs and are prevented from becoming disengaged therefrom. i
Pivoted to the inner side of each member 3 and to opposite sides of certain of the members l is a keeper 2? each having an inverted U-shaped notch 28. The notches 28 are adapted to engage over the collars 1i and complete the bearings of the shaft 6. The upper edge of each keeper is provided with a shallow recess 29. v
The top 30 of the casing engages the tops of the keepers and hold them in eugagement with the collars 1.1. The ends of .the casing are provided with elongated ill-- verted tl-shaped notches which bear upon the end collars, ll and when the casing is se cured in place as by means of screws 31 the parts are securely locked in position. The top is provided witha window 32 over each disc group whereby the numerals on the discs will be disclosed. A. strip of glass 33 extends the entire length of the casing and rests in the recesses 29 and is retained therein by the engagement of the top 30.
In order to reset the discs the shaft 6 is provided with a triangular groove 3d tending the entire length thereof. and each disc is provided with a pivoted. pawl 35 adapted to engage the groove. Each pawl has a section of spring wire coiled around its pivot and one end of the wire bears against the wall of a circular recess 36 in the side of the disc and in which the pawl is located, and the other end of the wire bears a i the tail of the pawl, il ien the tated by means of the hancle he pawls the groove 5 lcomes opposit ,heni are successively engaged and the dis s are all rotated until the character 0 of each of them is disclosed through the windows Tillie recess 36 of each disc is enclosed by means of a cap 38 which will protect the pawl 35 and its spring from injury or disarrangementand will also act as a washer etween the disc and the adjoining collar 11. The button rods being non-circular will always present the designations on the bottons in proper position. Being unsecured. to the frames 16the casing may be removed by simply removing the screws 31. The burrs on the inner end of the rods will prevent withdrawal of the rods when the casing is removed.
The fact that the springs 18 are unsecin'ed to the frames 16 makes assembling of the device easy, as does the fact that all of the frames are pivoted on a single rod and all of the pawls 22 are pivoted on a single rod.
/V hen the free end of the frame 16 is de pressed by the rod 19 to release the pawls 13, let and 15 from the ratchets to engage the next teeth, the tension of the springs 25 will be increased thereby causing increased engagement of the pawls 22 with the ratchets at the time that the pawls 13, i l and 15 are being dragged backwards over them. The springs 25 being of wire are not as likely to break as are leaf springs and are more easily replaceable than are the latter.
To remove the shaft 6 and the discs carried thereby, it is only necessary to remove the casin 20 and the glass 33 and swing the keepers 2% upward as shown in Fig. 5. The shaft may then be removed from the notches 5 without disturbing the relative positions of the discs which are positioned by the col lars l1. lhe said collars also cover the groove except at the points where the groove is engaged by the pawls 35.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, we have described the principle of our invention together with the apparatus which we now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but we desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is merely illustrative and that the invention may be carried out in other ways.
The invention having been described what is claimed and desired. to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the character described, comprising a series of alined standards, there being a notch in each standard, said notches being in alinement, a member pivoted to each standard, there being a notch in each member said member and standard notches being opposed to form bearings, a shaft mounted in the bearings, and mean commo to all of the members for retainin the same in position.
2. A device of the character described comprising a series of alined standards, there being a notch in each. standard, said notches being in alinement, a member pivoted to each standard there being a notch in each member, there being a recess in each member, said recesses being in alinement, an element resting in the recesses, said member and standard notches being opposed to form bearings, a shaft mounted in the bearings, and means common to all of the members for retaining the members and element in position.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a series of alined standards. there being a notch in each standard, said notches being in alinement, a. shaft, a plurality of groups of discs mounted on the shaft, a collar on the shaft between each pair of groups and spacing the same apart, said collars engaging the notches a keeper having a notch therein pivoted to each standard, said keeper notches each engaging a collar, and means common to all of the keepers for retaining the same in position.

A device of the character described, com n'ising a support, a shaft rotatably mounted in the support, a plurality of discs rotatably mounted on the shaft, a ratchetwheel carried by each disc, an open frame pivoted in the support, said frame surrounding the discs and lying to one side of: the shaft, a spring engaging the frame at a point opposite the pivot and tending to normally hold the frame in engagement with the shaft, a series of spring actuated pawls pivoted to the frame and adapted. to engage the ratchet-wheels, and manually operated means for depressing the free end of the frame against the tension oi the spring whereby when the pressure is released the spring will move the frame and pawls to rotate a disc or discs one tooth.
