T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERIG SOULAGES, citizen of the French Republic, residing at Decazeville, Department of the Aveyron, in France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention has for its object an advertising device applicable to doors of all kinds and comprising a movable advertising element provided with inscriptions, advertisements and so forth and mounted in such a manner that it is adapted to turn about a fixed pivot in a plane parallel to the plane of the door. From a mechanism operated by the opening and closing of the door the advertising element receives an intermittent movement of rotation in such a manner that the legends thereon pass in succession in front of an opening in the door.

The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 represents the apparatus applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a section on th line A-A in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the apparatus at the moment at which the door is being closed. Fig. 1 illustrates a detail. Figs. 5 and 6 show another embodiment of the apparatus. Figs. 7 and 8 illustrate two positions of the rod acting on the weighted lever.

Upon the frame 1 of the door 2 a ring 3 is mounted and serves as a fixed point for a cord 4 connected with a rod 5. This rod 5 is mounted to slide in two supports 6 G integral with a plate 7 fixed in any appropriate manner to the door 2; it is surrounded by a spring 9 bearing on the one hand upon the support 6 and on the other hand on a fixed collar or shoulder 8 upon the rod 5. This rod is also provided with a movable tappet 10 mounted upon a hinge pin 10. Said tappet is mounted inside a slot 5 in th rod which presents an inclined face 5 the purpose of which is hereinafter explained. The tappet 10 is adapted to engage a finger 11 integral with the hub 12 of a ratchet wheel 12. This hub carries a weighted lever 13 and presents upon its face directed toward the door a helicoidal incline 12 The ratchet wheel 12 is mounted upon a shaft let supported by the plate 7.

In the embodiment of the invention here illustrated, the inscriptions or announce ments are carried by a cross 15 with four arms, said cross being mounted loosely upon a sleeve 16 surrounding the shaft 14. A pawl 17 mounted upon the cross 15 is always held in engagement with the ratchet wheel 12 by means of a spring 17 A slot 18 is formed in the plate 7 in such a manner as to permitof the passage of the tappet 10; this slot ends at one of its extremities in a stop 19. Upon the plate 7 a flat, bent member 21 is pivoted at 20, one of its ends 22 being always maintained in engagement with the helicoidal face 12 on the hub of the ratchet wheel 12 by means of a spring 23, while the other end 22 is bent at right angles in such a manner that it is able to strike against the tappets 2% carried by the cross 15 and separated by flat springs 25. The advertisements or the like are arranged upon the arms of the cross and come in succession in front of an opening 26 formed at a suitable place in the door.

The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The door being closed, the spring 9 is compressed by the tension exerted by the cord, if the door 2 be opened its rotation about its hinges slackens the cord 4 and under the influence of the spring 9 the rod 5 is displaced in the direction indicated by the arrow f'. The movable tappet 10 which is fixed to one of the ends of the rod 5 is dis placed at the same time as the rod and encounters the finger 11 which is integral with the ratchet wheel 12. The tappet yields in side the slot 5 and only resumes a position at right angles to the rod when it reaches the extremity of the slot 18 in the plate 7, where it strikes against the stop 19. All the movements described above take place during the opening of the door, when the door closes the fixed point 3 of the door casing 1 makes the cord 4 taut and this draws toward it the rod 5 in opposition to the action of the spring 9. In the retractive movementof the rod 5, the movable tappet 10 engages the finger 11 of the ratchet wheel 12 and carries it along, consequently causing the ratchet wheel 12 and the weighted lever 13 to rotate in the direction indicated by the arrow 7" (Fig. 3). The helicoidal face 12 of the wheel 12 acts upon the extremity 22 of the member 21 which separates the extremity 22 from the cross 15, while the weight 13 assumes the horizontal position.

At this moment the tappet 10 suddenly leaves the finger 11, the wheel 12 is released and the weighted lever 13 commences to descend and by the intermediary of the ratchet wheel 12 displaces the pawl 17 fixed to the cross 15 (Fig. 1) in the direction indicated by the arrow f During the downward movement of the weight 13, the helicoidal face 12 acts upon the end 22 of the member 21 and brings toward the cross 15 the extremity 22 which slides upon the flat springs 22 and strikes against one of the tappets 24 when the weight 13 occupies its vertical position, thus limiting the rotation of the cross to one fourth of a revolution and fixing it during the whole of the time that the door remains closed, the extremity 22 of the brake remaining engaged between the spring 25 and the tappet 24:.

The device is simple and strong in construction, readily applied and not liable to get out of order. It will of course be understood that the cross might present a larger number of arms than four. In this case, the operating mechanism needs some slight modification as regards the number of ratchet teeth so that the cross is rotated only through of a revolution at each displacement of the door, at being the number of arms.

In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 5,

the inscriptions or announcements are placed on a cross or a plate mounted upon the sleeve or hub of a ratchet wheel 30. This wheel is carried by the same axle 14 as the weighted lever 13. A pawl 28 mounted upon the lever 13 is always held in engagement with the ratchet wheel 30 by means of a spring 29. A second pawl 31 subject to the action of a spring 32 and carried by a plate 7 fixed to the door is in engagement with the same ratchet wheel 30. The rod 5 carries a nose 25 which is able to come into engagement with a notch 26 of the lever 13. The rod 5 is mounted to slide longitudinally in two supports 6 6 integral with the plate 7 and it is surrounded by the spring 9. Moreover the rod 5 is allowed to move a certain amount upward and clownward in the support 6 The operation of the device is as follows: If the door 2 be opened, the rod 5 is displaced in the direction f and rides on the head of the lever 13 (Fig. 7). When the door closes the rod 5 is displaced in the direction P, the nose 25 comes into engagement with the notch 26 of the lever 13 and this latter is displaced upward, the pawl 28 slides on the ratchet wheel 30 which is retained in position by the pawl 31. WVhen the rod 5 arrives in the position of Fig. 8, it is about to leave the engagement with the notch 26 having been displaced in the support 6 The lever 13 is then free to come downward taking with it the ratchet wheel 30 by means of the pawl28.

I claim:

1. The combination with a door or the like, of a movable advertising element mounted directly on the door and adapted to move to a plurality of positions, a pivot ally mounted weight adapted to actuate said element, connection whereby the movement of the weight in one direction shifts said element to one of its positions, and means whereby the opening and closing movement of the door shifts said weight to its operative position.

2. The combination with a door or the like, of a movable advertising element mounted directly on the door and adapted to move to a plurality of positions, a pivotally mounted weight also mounted on said door adapted to actuate said element, connections whereby the movement of the weight in one direction shifts said element to one of its positions, and means whereby the opening and closing movement of the door shifts said weight to its operative position.

3. The combination with a door or the like, of a movable advertising element mounted directly on the door and adapted to move to a plurality of positions, a weight to actuate said element pivotally associated with the door, connections whereby the opening and closing movements of the door raises said weight to its operative position, and connections whereby the lowering of said weight moves said element to one of its positions.

4:. The combination with a door or the like, of an advertising element pivotally mounted thereon, a weight pivotally associated with the door, connections whereby the lowering of the weight actuates said element, connections whereby said weight is raised and released by the opening and closing of the door, and means to normally hold said element in fixed position when said weight is in its lowest position, said means being released when the weight is raised to permit the advertising element to be actuated by the weight.
