Description

PATENTED MAYVSO, 1905.
No. 79092a 0. c. SHEPPARD. EMASOULATOR.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 7, 1904.
UNITED STATES Patented May 30, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
EIVIASCULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,928, dated May 30, 1905.
Applicatioii filed December 7, 1904. Serial No. 235,825.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER O. SHEPPARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oenterville, in the county of Turner and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Emasculators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an emasculator, and has for its object to provide an instrument of this kind which is speedy and safe in operation, convenient to handle, and which can be readily cleaned.
Improved details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the invention will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views on the line 2 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 and 6 denote the crushing-jaws, which have curved and serrated faces, as usual. The jaws are provided with handles 7 and 8, respectively, which are pivotally connected, as at 9. A cutter 10 is pivoted on the bolt 9 and has a handle 11 extending downwardly, so as to be within easy reach of the hand which opperates the handles of the crushing-jaws. This construction enables the crushing and cutting to be conveniently done with one hand. The cutting edge of the cutter is serrated, as
at 12, and also curved. At 13 is indicated aplate which is secured to or formed integral with the jaw 5 on one side thereof. It is also provided with a knife-edge 14, which cooperates with the cutter 10, the latter entering the space between the jaw 5 and the plate when said cutter is operated.
In use the testicle is exposed ready for removal by cutting into the scrotum, as usual. The spermatic cord is then crushed, as high up as possible, by the jaws 5 and 6. It is then again crushed farther down, after which it is severed by the cutter 10. The instrument can be easily held in one hand and the crushingjaws and the cutter can be readily operated with the same hand. It is most rapid and is safe, no hemorrhage following its use, as the cord is thoroughly crushed before cutting, and in cutting it completely severs the cord. The crushing and cutting are not done simultaneously, whereby the danger of hemorrhage is entirely removed. The instrument can be easily taken apart for thorough cleaning.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An emasculator comprising crushingjaws and an independently-operating cutter, said jaws and cutter having operating-handles which are crossed and pivotally connected.
2. An emasculator comprising crushingjaws and an independently-operating cutter, said jaws and cutter being pivotall y connected and provided with operating-handles, and a plate carried by one of the jaws, said plate being spaced therefrom and provided with a knife-edge arranged to cooperate with the cutter.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OLIVER O.. SHEPPARD.
