J. H, `GODWIN, OFY SCOTLAND NECK, NORTH CAROLINA.
Letters Patent No. 79,066, dated June 23, 1868,
IMPROVEMENT IN 'HAMMERSQ '.EO ALL WHOM IT MAY-COlCEfRlW=` Be it known that I, J. H.'GODWIN, of ScotlandNeck, in the county of' Halifax, and State of North Caro, Vlina, have invented a new and-useful CombinedfHammer, Rule, Screw-Driver, Nail-Holder, and TackClaw and Ido hereby declare that the following is a'fnll, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled `in the'art' to make and use the samereference' being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. y y
The object of' this invention is to combine, in ayery simple and inexpensive way, avhammer with a series of implements used -most generally. inoonnection with it, so that several tools or implements may be manu- 4featured invoonneotion 'with a hammer nearly as cheap as the hammer alone.
In` the accompanying sheet of draningsi IFigure 1 is a side view of my invention.
Figure 2,1m end view of the sanne.`
Figure 3, a detached view of' the end of the handle of the same.

A`represents the handle ofa hammer, which may be constructed of wood as usual, and B the hammer-head, constructed of steel, or iron and in any'ot'rthe'v known forms; The handle A is graduated into inches, and eightbsthereof, as shownin fig. 1, and in the end of the handle there is a screw-driver, C. l
The hammer-head is `provided with the` usuall nail-claw D, one of the prongs of which is provided with a V-shaped notch, a, to serveas atack orbrad-claw, (sce fig. 2,) and in the'inner side ofthe hammer-head there istv made a V-shaped groove, b, extending longitudinally from the face of the hammer to the socket c which receivesl the end of the handle. p Theinner end of this groove is formed with a recess, d, to'receive the'head of a nail, the
v body of the latter being tted in the groove b, and its end projecting beyond the face of the hammer, as shown in red in iig; Ail. By this arrangement a nail may, preparatory to driving it, be stuck into a board or any woodwork-.beyond the reach fof theA operator, or when at's'ueh a distance as to preclude him from holding'thc nail with one hand and at the same time admit him striking it ivith the hammer in the other hand.
Inusing the screw-driver, the hammer-head-serves as a lever. The device may be manufactured at a very smalladvan'ce above that of the hummer alone, and '.vrill prove a very useful combination f implements for mechanics generally, especially for out-door work, where tools are carried inboxes, .as portability is obtained and considerable time saved in handling, for 'where a plurality of tools is used, and .the tools changedV at short intervals, a great deal oftime is expended in takingup and laying them down, and searching for themavhen mislaid'or out of placc.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufactureg'lhe tool, consisting f the combination of a hammer with graduated handle and tack-claw with a screw-driver, constructed as described.
