This invention relates to an improved coalv gate for locomotive-tenders, which is made up of a plurality of sections connected by chains or other flexible means, so as to have a limited independent movement, whereby the gate is elevated gradually by raising the sections in.
successive order.
The main objects of the invention are to provide for convenient exposure of coal in the coal-space and for elevating the gate gradually as the coal is used with but minimum effort. This is accomplished by connecting the sections so that they can be independently elevated in successive order, whereby but one sec} tion of comparatively narrow'width and having but slight area in comparison with the total area of'the gate is raised at one time against the friction of the coal, so that the gate is comparatively easy to raise. In order to still further decrease the friction, and thus render it easier to elevate, the gate may, if it is desired, be inclined slightly from the perpendicular, so the sections will have a tendency to slide diagonally on the coal instead of vertically in raising.
The invention also relates to certain details of construction, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter described and claimed, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a locomotive-tender and a fragment of a locomotive, the tender being partially broken away at its forward end to show the improved coal-gate, the gate being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a front end View of the locomotive-tender, the gate being shown closed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detached front elevation of the gate. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line a a, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line b b, Fig. 6, through a fragment of one of the angle-irons and sliding plates to show the method of securing the chains in place. In referring to the drawings for the details of construction like numerals designate like parts.
The locomotive of which a fragment is shown in Fig. 1 is designated by the numeral 1 and may be of any of the usual and well-known types. The tender. 2, whichis coupled to the locomotive, has a coal-space 3. The forward end of the coal-space or coal-box is closed by a coal-gatewhich is made up of sections connected by chains and adapted to be elevated in successive order to gradually enlarge the extent of the forward opening as the coal is used. The sections of thecoal-gate are substantially duplicates of each other, with the exception of the bottom section. These duplicate sections are each composed of a substantially rectangular or main body portion 4, which is of angular form in cross-section, (see Fig. 10,) and an angle-iron 5, which extends horizontally along and is riveted to the upper part of said body portion 4. It will be noted by referring to Fig. 4. that the body of 160 each section is lapped by the lower portion of the body of the next higher section in order to prevent any bulging of the sections of the gate from interior pressure of the coal. The angle-irons 5 are bent outward at each end to provide a slot or slideway 6, (see Figs. 4 and 12,) in which the inwardly-extending flanges or parts of the vertical portions of a substantially U-shaped angleiron 7, riveted to the lining 8 of the coal-space, extend. The lower body-section ofthe gate comprises a body portion 9, which is cut away to leave a space 10 beneath the gate, which is always open, (see Fig. 3,) and an angle-iron 11, which is similar in contour to the angle-irons 5. The sections are elevated by chains 12, preferably two in number, which are fastened at their lower ends to eyebolts 18, attached to the angleiron 11 of the bottom section, and at their upper extremity to a transverse shaft 14, which is journaled at or near the upper forward corner of the tender and constitutes a Windlass for the chain. The sections of the gate, with the exception of the bottom section, are connected together by chains 15 for the purpose of maintaining them in proper separated condition when the gate is fully down, as shown in Fig. 3, or partially elevated, as shown in Fig. 11. The chains 15 are fastened at their upper ends by eyebolts 16 to the horizontal portion of the U-shaped angle-iron 7 and at their lower ends to the angle-irons 5 of the section immediately above the bottom section by eyebolts 17. (See Fig. 10.) These chains 15 pass through openings in the angle-irons of each of the sections to which their lower ends are secured, and said sections are locked to the chains against sliding by slotted plates 18. The openings in the angle-irons 5, through which the. chains 15 pass, are shaped in the 23, mounted on the shaft 14, which is engaged by a pawl 24. A lever 25 is provided which has a pawl 26 in engagement with the ratchet and is utilized to start the shaft when it is stuck or works hard from clogging through the weight of the coal. It will be noted by referring to Fig. 10 that the gate is inclined slightly from the perpendicular, so that it is easier to elevate. The sections of the gate are thus arranged so that they each have a limited independent movement and contact with and are adapted to elevate the next higher section by a continuation of the upward movement as the limit of their independent movement. The advantage of this is that but one section of comparatively small area is elevated at a time against the friction of the coal instead of the entire gate, so that it is fairly easy to lift up the gate by successively raising the sections as the coal is used. if desired, the body portion 4 of each section may be bent or offset near the bottom edge thereof, as shown in Fig. 17, instead of immediately below the angle-irons 5.
The slideway 6 is sufiiciently wider than the flanges of the U-shaped angle-iron 7 to permit the sections to rock or tilt slightly, and so fit closely one upon the other when the gate is opened, and thus prevent any dust or dirtfrom lodgingbetween the sections or passing through and clogging them.
I claim as my invention 1. Inadeviee oftheclassdescribed, thecombination with a coal-box of a locoi'noth'e-tender, of a gate slidably mounted in the front of the tender and composed of aseries of connected sections, each of which is slidablc throughout its length for a limited distance independently of other sections.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a coal-box of a locomotive-tender having a slideway at its front, of a transverse gate slidably mounted in the slideway at the front of the tender and composed of a series of sections and chains connecting said sections.
3. In adevice of the class described, the combination with a coal-box of a locomotive-tender having a slideway, of a transverse gate slidably mounted in the slideway of said tender and made up of independent sections each consisting of a body and an angle-iron fastened to said body.
4. In adevice of the class described, the combination with a coal-box of a locomotive-tender, of a gate slidably mounted in the front of the tender and made up of independent seetions each consisting of a body and an angleiron fastened to said body and chains passing through and connecting said sections.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a coal-box of a locomotive-tender of a gate slidably mounted in the front of the tender and made up of independent sections each consisting of a body and an angleiron fastened to said body, and chains passing through the angle-irons for connecting said sections.
6. The combination with the coal-box of a locomotive-tender, having an angle-iron secured to the sides of the lining of said coalbox, of a gate made up of independent sections and having slotted ends into which the projecting parts of the angle-irons extend.
7. The combination with a coal-box of a locomotive-tender, of an angle-iron secured to the sides of the lining of said coal-box, and a gate made up of independent sections each consisting of a body and an angle-iron which are separated at the ends to provide slots in which the angle-iron attached to the coal box'lining projects.-

In a device of the class described, the combination with the coal-box of a locomotivetender, of a coal-gate composedof a series of connected and lapping sections each having a limited independent movement whereby but one section is elevated at one time against the friction of the coal and means'for elevating said sections including a rotatable shaft and chains connecting at their respective ends to the shaft and the bottom section of the gate.
12. In a device of the class described, the combination with the coal-box of a locomotivetender, of a coal-gate composed of a series of lapping sections each having a limited independent movement and means for elevating said sections including a rotatable shaft, a ratchet on the shaft, a pawl engaging said ratchet and chains connecting at their respective ends to the shaft and the bottom section of the gate.
13. In a device of the class described, the combination with the coal-box of a locomotivetender, of a coal-gate composed of a series of lapping sections each having a limited independent movement and means for elevating said sections including a rotatable shaft, a
ratchet on the shaft, a lever having a pawl engaging with the ratchet and chains connecting at their respective ends to the shaft and the bottom section of the gate.
