RAILROAD GATE. No. 267,705. Patented Nov. 21,1882.
WITNESSES I W 0 S UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM T. MOOLURE, OF JOE, AND WALTER N. MITCHELL, OF JBLUE RIDGE SPRINGS, VIRGINIA.
RAILROAD-GATE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 267,705, dated November 21, 1882.
' ApplieutionfiledAugust12,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM T. MoOLUaE, of Joe, in the county of Bedford, and WALTER N. MITCHELL, of Blue Ridge Springs, in the county of Botetourt, and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Gates and we do hereby declare that the following is aful], clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable cthers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side view of our improved railroad-ga-te, showing also a transverse sectional View of the track; and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 00 :20, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to railroad-gates; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
A in the drawings represents a narrow pit, formed transversely in the road-bed, under and transverse to the track.
B B are posts or uprights-set in the sides or ends of said pit and extending some distance above the track, so as to form guides for the gate 0, which slides vertically between said posts B. The gate consists of a base or sill, D, a center panel, E, which slides or fits between the rails F F of the track, pickets G, and vertical side or end posts, H. The latter are equipped with pulleys I on their 'outer sides, which work in grooves J, in order to cause the gate to work steady and to reduce friction to a minimum.
The posts B have pulleys P at their upper ends, over which pass cords K, the inner ends of which are attached to hooks L at the upper ends of the gate-posts H. The outer ends of the cords K carry weights M, which serve to balance the gate. The posts H are provided on their inner sides, near their upper ends, with brackets N, forming rests for the bars 0, the ends of which are pivoted to the rails on both sides of and at some distance from the gate. The bars 0 may be pivoted either to the inner or to the outer side of the rails, so as to be operated upon by the flange or tread, as the case may be, of the wheels of rollingstock passing the gate.
The operation of this invention will be easily seen. Pressure upon any of the bars 0 by the wheels of cars approaching thegate will force the latter down into the pit'A, where it remains until the pressure upon the bars 0 ceases, when it is automatically returned bythe balanceweights M to its raised or closed position.
We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The herein-described railroad-gate, consisting of the sill D, center panel, E, composed of pickets G and end posts, H, having brackets N, the whole adapted to slide vertically in a pit under the track between posts set in said pit, in combination with balance-Weights and cords and the pivoted operating-bars O, as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM THOMAS MC OLURE. WALTER NAUGLE MITCHELL.
