CAR-STAKE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM EDGAR CAL- LAWAY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Trout Mills, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Stakes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention to be hereinafter described relates to car stakes.

In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation, and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application.

Throughout the several figures of the drawings like reference characters designate the same parts.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of one end of a flat car, with the stake in operative position; Fig. 2 is a right hand elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the stake, remoyed; Fig. 4: is a top plan view of the end of a flat car, with the stake in inoperative position; Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the stake pocket and groove; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the stake pocket, detached and open.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 indicates the end of a flat car or the like provided with a groove 2 adapted to receive the stake. At the end of this groove is bolted a casting 3 having one hinged or pivoted wall 1 provided with side flanges 5 and a bottom flange 6. When raised to operative position, this wall forms, with the rest of the casing, a rectangular stake pocket. The flange 6 forms the bot-tom of the pocket to prevent the stake from falling through, and the side flanges 5 cooperate with the opposite side wall to form narrow guide ways or grooves for the pins 7 of the stake. Short fingers 8 project inwardly toward the flanges 5 to engage the pins 7 and prevent removal of the stake. 'The outer lower end of the stake is beveled as at 9, so that the stake may be turned down flat as in Fig.

In order to hold the wall t in operative position when a load is on the stake, a chain 10 has been provided. One end of this chain is hooked into a staple at one side of the casting. The chain is then led through a staple 11 on a block 12 on the outside of the movable wall 4, and has its opposite end secured to a winding shaft 13 journaled in the car framing and provided with a hand wheel 14. A suitable pawl and ratchet may be used to prevent unwinding. When the stake has been turned downto inoperative position-or removed, the wall 4 may be held in closed position by a simple leaf spring 15 pivotally mounted on the back of the wall and adapted to have its opposite ends engaged beneath the holding hooks 1G projecting from the side walls of the casing.

It is thought that the operation and use of the invention will be clear from the preceding detailed description.

Changes may be made in the construction, arrangement, and disposition of the several parts of the invention without in any way departing from the field and scope of the same, and it is meant to include all such within this application wherein only a preferred form has been disclosed.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In combination, a stake pocket casting provided with one hinged wall having side and bottom flanges, and a stake slidably and pivotally mounted in said pocket and provided with pins adapted to travel between said flanges and the adjacent wall.

2.
