This invention relates to improvements in lids for journal boxes and the object of my invention is to provide a lid? which has spring actuated means to hold it in either the opened or closed positions and also with a gravity operating bolt which will lock it inclosed position, in such amanner that it will be impossible for the waste on the inside to force the lid open. a

Referring now to the'details of the drawings by numerals: 1- designates a journal box which maybe made of any desired construetion but the'one illustrated in the drawings is constructed on the Master Car Builders lines. In other words,'the upper part of the box has integrally cast therewith the two bearings 3' and 1 connected by a web5 having its uppersurface 6 and its vertical surface 7 substantiallyfiat to cooperate with the spring usually employed in. the common form of lid. The bearings 3 and 4 are provided with an opening 8 through which passes the pin forming the pivot for the lid. The construction so far-described forms no part of my present invention but is.illus-' trated as my lid is constructed to work on boxes having the" bearings 3 and'l just described.

The casing 26 is preferably formed of a malleable casting, and the end through whichythe notched member 32 projects is provided with a lug 34 which, after the casing 26 has been placed in position, may be tapped with a hammer so that the free end of the lug enters one of the notches to lock the casing in position.
The bottom of my lid is provided with a sliding bolt 40, the lid itself being provided with a casing 42 on its under side to form a housing for said bolt. Thus the bolt is entirely inclosed and to limit-its motion within the pocket formed by the casing 42, I provide on the exterior of the lid a lug 44 having two lips 46 and between these lips is formed an opening through which a pin 48 is inserted, the lower end of the pin passing through a slot 50 in the sliding bolt 40, this pin 48 and its slot 50 thereby limiting the movement of the sliding bolt 40 within its casing 42. The upper end of the pin 48 is formed with round edges so that after the pin is inserted in position, the lips 46 may be hammered toward each other so as to co-act with the rounded end ofthe pin 48 and rivet the ame in place. The lower end of the sliding bolt 40 is provided with a flange 52 which may be engaged by the lever of the inspector and oilers to lift the sliding bolt so that the lid may be opened. The
lower wall of the opening to be closed by the lid 10 isformed with two flanges 54 and 56 between which the locking flange 58 of the bolt drops when said bolt is in the locking position shownin Fig. 2. The inner flange 56 is provided with one or more perforations 60 through which any oil which leaks over the topof the flange 56may pass back into the box. It will thus be seen that I have provided a look which will be selfacting whenever the lid is closed.
It will be noticed that the bottom wall of the casing 42, through which the sliding bolt 40 projects, is, when the lid is in the closed position shown inFig. 2, directly over the flange 56 and said bottom wall,

From an inspection of my drawings, it will be seen that I have invented a simple form of lid for journal boxes which is held in either closed or opened position by means of a spring pressed plunger, and also one.

What I claim as my inventionis:
1. In a journal box in combination with bearings on the upper part thereof, a lid having its upper portion hinged to said bearings, said upper portion having a cam projecting therefrom with'two cam faces substantially at right angles, to each other, and said box having a springpressed plungcr located in Working relation to said cam adapted. to project against one portion of said cam toqhold the lid open, the other part of said cam slightly overhanging said plunger when the lid is closed whereby a lock is formed. 7
2. In a journalrbox and in combination with bearings on the upper part thereof, a lid having its upper portion hinged to said bearings, said upper portion having a cam projecting rearwardly, said'box having a wedge shaped member, and a casing having a recess'to fit over said wedge shaped member, and a spring pressed plunger within' said casing working against said cam to hold the lid in position.
3. In a journal box and in combination with bearings on the upperpart thereof, a
lid having its upper portion hinged to said bearings, said upper portion having a cam projecting rearwardly, said boxhaving a wedge shaped member having notches therein, andfa casing having a recess to fit over said wedge shaped member, said casing having amember adapted to be .moved into said notches to lock the casing in position, and a spring pressed plunger within said casing working againstsaid cam to hold the lid in position.
4. In a journal box and in combination with bearings on the upper part thereof, a lid having its upper portion formed with two lugs or bearings connected by a hood, a pin'passing through the bearings of said lid and said box and hinging the lid to the box, the aforesaid hood protecting the parts and having a cam projecting rearwardly, said box having a spring pressed plunger working against said cam to hold the, lid in 5.
