PATENT OFFICE.
' THOMAS PLIOE, OF ASHLAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM V. B. 'TOPPING AND GUY O. BOWMAN, OF ASHLAND, OHIO.
DOOR-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,524, dated May 23, 1905. A li ati fil d January 20, 1905. Serial No. 241,973-
a To all whom it nwty concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS PLIoE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in
' specification.
My invention is an improved door-hanger capable of both vertical and lateral adjustment to enable the door to be correspondingly adjusted; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a door-hanger embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicatedby the line a a of Fig. 1. Fig. '3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line I) b of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the door bracket or plate, showing the inner side of the same; and Figs. 5 and 6 are elevations showing different forms of tracks and wheelhousings in connection with which my devices may be used.
The track may be of any suitable construction. One form of the track is shown in Fig. 1, and two other constructions of the track are shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The wheelwhich operates on the track may be also of any suitable form, and the housing for the wheel and which forms the link or hanger may be of any suitable form, such as are shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 5, or Fig. 6.
In theembodiment of my invention I provide a bracket or plate 4. for attachment to a door and a link member 5, which is pivotally \7 connected to the wheel-housing and is connected to the plate or bracket 4 for vertical and lateral adjustment therein to enable the door to be vertically adjusted at either end and to also enable the door tobe laterally adjusted or canted or inclined, as may be required, to prevent it from binding against the wall of the'structure on which the door is employed and to enable it to counteract the force of the Wind. The plate or bracket 4 is adapted to bear against the outer side of the door and is formed with ears 6, having openings for the reception of bolts 7, which are employed to secure the saidplate or bracket to the door. The said plate or bracket is formed on its outer side with a vertically-disposed lateral offset 8, the outer wall of which is inclined and converges upwardly toward the outer face of the plate and the lower end of which is substantially perpendicular to its outer wall, as at 9. The said ofiset extends from the upper side of the plate to within a suitable distance of the lower end thereof and is formed near its lower end with a reinforce-flange 10. The upper ears of the plate or bracket are formed on their outer sides, at their edges, with reinforceflanges 11. On the inner side of the offset 8 is a vertical laterally-inclined channel 12, and the upper portion of the plate or bracket is formed on its inner side with flanges 13, which form lateral extensions of the side walls of the said channel and are adapted to be seated in a laterally-inclined mortise 14, formed in the door 15 at the upper end of the latter. The lower portion of the channel 12 is closed, as at 16, and is provided with an unthreaded opening 17 In theouter side of the offset 8, near the upper end thereof, is a screw-threaded opening for the reception of a screw 18, which is employed for laterally adjusting the door in connection with the link member 5, as hereinafter described.
The link 5 comprises a shank portion 19 to lie in the channel 12, and a screw 20 at the lower end of and oblique with reference to said shank portion to project through and operate in the opening at the lower end of the channel, and a yoke-head 21' for detachable flexible pivotal engagement with the hook at the lower end of the wheel-housing. The shank 19 of the link is provided on its inner and outer sides with channels 22, and on the screw-threaded portion of said shank is an adjusting-nut 23, which bears against the under .side of the lateral offset 8 of the plate or bracket 4:. The point of the adjusting-screw 18 bears in one of the channels 22.
It will be understood that by turning the nut 23 thelink member 5 may be moved vertically to correspondingly adjust the door.
By turning the screw 18 the upper portion of the link member 5 may be adjusted laterally, so as .to effect a corresponding adjustment of the door, and hence cause the latter to lie parallel with the wall of the structure on which the door is used. By thus laterally adjusting the door the latter may be prevented from bearing against and binding on thewall of the structure, and it may also be enabled to be so disposed as to counteract the force of the wind, which might otherwise cause it to bind against the wall.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. In a door-hanger of the class described, the combination of a track or hanger member, a linkmember depending therefrom, and a door plate or bracket member with which the link member is slidably connected for vertical and lateral movement, and means exterior to the plate to vertically and laterally adjust said link member with reference to said door plate or bracket.
2. In a door-hanger of the class described, the combination of a track or hanger memher, a laterally-inclined link member depending therefrom, and a door member with which said link member is connected for vertical and lateral movement, and means to adjust said link member vertically and laterally with respect to said door member.
3. In a door-hanger of the class described, the combination of a track or hanger member, a link member depending therefrom and flexibly connected thereto for angular movement with respect thereto, a door member having a vertical channel in which said link member is vertically and laterally movable, and adjusting-screws to move said link member vertically and laterally in said door member.
4. In a door-hanger of the class described, the combination of a track or hanger member provided with a laterally-depending limb screw-threaded at its extremity, with a door member vertically channeled, in which said depending limb is vertieall y and laterally movable, and an adjusting screw and nut substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS PLlCE.
