Description

WILLIAM WAL-LAGE; or ANSQ'NIA, `counterreur- Letters Patent No. 79,036, dated June `16,1868.
` IMPRWEDMAGH/INE FOR FORMING LAMP-TUBES.
tite, tlgttidi numb it in tigen ttttts ttutt mit mittag pitt nf tIge same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
` V:Be it known. that I,-WILLIAMWALLAGE, of Ansonia, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Forming Lamp-Tubes; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the'aceomp'anying drawings, and the letters of-reference marked thereon, to be a Vfull, clear, 'and-exact description ofthe same, and which said drawings constitute partof this specicitication, and'repres sent, in-
Figure 1, a perspective view, Figure 2 au instrument for forcing the bars, and in Figure 3 a central section'illustrating the operation., A This invention relates to an improvementfor forming lamp-tubes or similar articles other than of a cylin d'rical form, designed specially for forming iiat tubes for kerosene-lamps. n The common. manner of making these' tubes and articles of similar form is to draw out-a cylinder tothe proper size, and then'tlat'the tubeby outward pressure, or hammering upon a bar of the required form. This, in metalrot` which the tubes are necessarily made, almost invariably forms .wrinklesor irregularities in the sur face of the tube.
The object of my invention is to avoid the diiculties experienced in forming-tubes by the old process, and facilitate the process, and produce a better article.; "and my invention consists in the arrangement of a pair of bars, the outer edges of which are parallel to each other, or nearly so, and-the bars arranged each independent of the other, and; so' as to benforced from each other, maintaining the same parallel position, and arranged so that both are easilyinserted'within the cylindrical tube; then, by the forcing apart of the said bars, the tube is spread and stretched into proper yform in the most perfect manner.
Inorder to the clear understanding of my invention, I will fully describe the same. as illustrated in the y accompanying drawings. p
A is one bar, 6 the other, their two cuter edges parallel, or nearly so, to each other. Each of the said bars is attached lrmlypto the slides A and B, respectively, which said slides arranged in a suitable guide, (l, so ns'to permit the vmovement of the bars, the one from the-other, and yet hold them in their upright position, so that in their movement they retain their parallel position. A convenient manner of spreading the two Abars is,vas r'epr'esented in the drawing, to form their' two edges inclined outward, so as to receive a wedge, D, the said wedge corresponding to the incline ofthe two'bars, and so that whendriven between the bars it will force them apart, as denoted in red, fig. 3.
flhe .thickness of the bars mustl correspond to the thickness ofthe tube, and the outer edge ofthe bar must also conform to the shape desired for the edge of the tube. Y
The tubes to be formed by this apparatus are rst produced in cylindrical form, ofthe required length, and inthe usual manner; then, the two barsclosed together, the cylindrical tube isplaccd over the said two bars,
and the wedge D inserted, and driven down to force the barsfrom each other, which operation spreads andV attens the tube into the`form desired, corresponding tothe forml of the bars a and b when. spread; then the Awedge is forced out xin any convenient manner, the finished tube removed, another placed thereon, and in like manner'formed, and so continued. i A
'Various devices may be employed for forcing apart the two bars, but the wedge I have described is a simple and convenient manner. While I do not conne myself to the use of th`e wedge for this, I yetprei'er it forV its simplicity. p
If, as in some burners, it is desired to make an enlargement upon the edge of' the tube, as for the purpose of xing the tube in its proper position lin theburner, a corresponding projection should be formed on theedge of the bars, which will force thermetal outward, and form the required projection'. 1
Having thus-fully described my invention, what I claim asnew and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iis'
The arrangement of thetwo bars tand b, their outer edges parallel lto each other, or nearly so, so as to yreceive the cylindrical tube, andcombined with a device to force the said bars, s o as to iiatteu and forum the tube substantially in the manner herein set forth. y
i WILLIAM WALLACE.
