JOHN BRETT, OF MEMPHIS. MICHIGAN`- Letters Patent No. 82,077, dated September 15, 1868.
l IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES EOE EoEMINe EAvEs-TEoUeEs..
'IO WI-IOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known' that LOHN BRETT, of Memphis, in the county of Macomb, and State of Michigan, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in a Machine for Forming EavesTroughs and I do declare that the t following is a true and accurate description thereof', refercnceheing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification. v Y
This invention consists in the arrangement of clamps, for the more perfect forming of metal eaves-troughs, and a cylindrical roller attached thereto, by means of which to form the roll or bead. The clampsmay be made of any desired shape, while those exhibited in the drawings are designed to form an eaves-trough with the ogec" -shape. v
I-n order to'accomplish this end, I construct a. bed-plate, A, provided with a properr'groove, B, within which rotates, by means of the crank C, the cylindrical slotted. roller D., held in place, when in use,by the staples or guides E. Upon the top of the bed-'plate A, I hinge thel crimping-clamp F, provided with handle G. To the front of the clamp F, I hings a continuation of said clamp, H, provided with locking-flange I, which engages' with and locks over the front of the bed-plate at J, and also provided with handle K, by means of which to operate it. Y
The bed-plate A may be made in two parts, as shown by red lines in the drawing, the rear part being stationary, while the front part may rest upon slides, and -be attached to the rear part by means of thumbscrews, also shown in red lines, so that the front part may be extended, to increase the width of the eaves-trough, or either end thereof', as may be desired.
To operate this apparatus, take a properl sheet of metal, insert 'one end into the slot in the cylindrical roller, then give said roller one revolution, by means of a proper crank, then, by means ofthe handle G, shut down the clamp F, and then its continuationH, by means ofthe handle K. In this way, the shape is given to the eavestrough mu'ch more easily than if the crimping-clamp were all in one piece. Then raise the clamps, and draw out the cylindrical roller, when the sheet will be formed, return the roller to place, and proceed.
What Ielaim as my invention, and desire to secure hy Letters Patent, isl- The eaves-trough former, constructed, as herein described, ot' the grooved bed-.plate A, crimping-elamp F, hinged thereto, with its hinged continuation H I and slotted roller D, all arranged and constructed as herein shown and described. i
JOHN BRETT.
