GEORGE THOMPSON ROBIE, OE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
INDEX FOR SUPPLY-CABINETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,946, dated May 2, 1905.
Application filed November 2, 1904. Serial No. 231,109.
To 1r/ZZ whom, t www concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE THOMPSON Ro- Bin, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indexes for Supply-Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in indexes for supplycabinets and the like.
The invention has for its object the production of a simple and comprehensive index to be applied to cabinets containing articles of merchandise, the latter being arranged in deposit-boxes according to its size. To this end I provide a cabinet with one or more drawers containing compartments adapted to receive articles of merchandise in packages or deposit boxes, said compartments being subdivided into smaller compartments to receive various sizes of articles of the same general character. Over each general compartment is arranged a hinged cover, upon the topvface of which is indicated in any suitable manner the general character of the articles contained therein, the under face of said cover being subdivided to conform to the arrangement of the smaller compartments, said subdivisions containing an index of the articles deposited in the corresponding compartments.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a View in perspective of a supply-cabinet with my improved index applied thereto.
Referring to the drawing, 10 designates a cabinet which may be of any suitable structure, that shown being provided with drawers 11. Each drawer is arranged with a series of general compartments 12, covered by a hinged cover 13, said compartments 12 being subdivided into smaller compartmentsrli, as shown. On the top face of each cover is printed an index 15, indicating the general nature of the goods to be found beneath said cover. The
under face of said cover is provided with a plurality of divisions 16, conforming to the subdivisions of smaller compartments, and each of said divisions is provided with an index 17, indicating the particular size or form of the general class of goods to be found in each compartment. For instance, the cabinet shown is meant for the use of sewing-machine supplies. It will be noted that the upper drawer contains a plurality of covers 13, each indicating a particular style of sewing-machine, the goods contained beneath said coversr being needles designed for use with that particular machine. The needles are arranged according' to size in packages within the subdivisions 14, and the Linder side Of the cover contains an index of the size to be found in each subdivision. For example, assuming that the cover 13, which is shown as turned back, is for the l/Vheeler Sz Wilson machine and it is desired to [ind a needle that would take No. 40 cotton, the salesman turns back the cover containing the Wheeler Se Wilson index and on the under side of said cover reads that size No. 2 or No. 1 will take the required thread, and said index indicates that these sizes are contained in packages deposited in the fourth and third compartments 14, respectively.
The advantages of my improved index will be at once apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains. It will be particularly observed that by means thereof the desired articles are readily located by the salesman and that all information regarding such articles is plainly printed upon the index. Another advantage lies in the fact that the dealer is enabled to readily keep account of his stock. Another advantage is that there is no mixing up of the various sizes of articles, and hence confusion in filling orders is avoided. Itwill also be observed that the deposit boxes or compartments of the cabinet may be arranged to contain single items or packages without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim as my invention- The combination with a cabinet provided with a plurality of main compartments subdivided into smaller supplemental compartments, of a hinged cover for each main compartment, the top face of each cover being IOO provided With an indeX of the articles conl In testimony whereof I have signed this tained in the compartment thereunder, the uni speciication in the preseneeof twosubsorib- IO der side of said-'cover being subdivided to conin'gwitnesses.
