Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. J. WALKER, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED SPICE-HOLDER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,414, dated August 21, 1866.
To all whom it may con-cem:
Beit known that I, A. J. WALKER, of Lowell, in the county ot Middlesex and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved SpiceHolder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable Others skilled in the art to in ake and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanyingdrawings,forn1- ing part ot' this specification.
. The present invention relates to au extremely novel and useful utensil for household or family use; and it consists in arranging a wheel or cylinder divided into several compartments or boxes, ot' suitable size to receive a sui'licient quantity ot each of the varions kinds of spices ordinarily employed for culinary purposes, such as mace, nutmeg, ginger, ground cloves, cinnamon, &c., within a suitable holder or stand therefor in such a manner that it can be freely revolved therein, and thus any one ot' its several compartments brought to an opening made in the said stand, and provided with a cover or lid for closing it, for the removal of any portion or all of its contents, and for the filling of the same, accord ing as may bc desired.
In accompanying plate oi' drawings, my improved spice-holder or stand is illustrated, Figure l. being a plan or top view ofthe holder; Fig. 2, a central transverse vertical section taken inthe plane ot' the line zum. Fig. l; and Fig. a plan or top view of the spice-wheel detached from the holder or stand.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A in the drawings represents a wheel or cylinder, which may be made of tin or other sheet metal or other suitable material. This wheel is divided in to a series of compartments or boxes, B B, by means of vertical partitions O, which extend in radial lines and are at equal distances apart. In the center of the wheel A isxed a vertical tube, D, the upper end of which is slotted at c for a portion of its length, with which slot engages a stud, b, of a spindle, E, having a knob, F, at one end, by which spindle the wheel A is secured and hung within a stand or holder, G, so that by turning such spindle the wheel can be revolved within the said stand.
The front side of thc 4stand G is left open so as to expose the side of the wheel A to view, upon which I intend to mark, at the proper points, the names or titles of the various kinds of spices, such as mace, cinnamon, &c., that the wheel is designed to hold or con tain.
The upper side of the wheel is covered by a top board, H, of the holder G,- a portion ot' which is cut away corresponding to the size and shape ot' one ot' the wheel compartments or boxes, in which cut-away portion is hung or hinged a lid or cover, I, for closing the same.
Upon the upper side of the top board H are arranged two drawers, J J, one at each end, which drawers are intended for cream-tartar, soda, or any other desired articles. Between these two drawers, at their rear ends, a partition, K, is fastened, forming a' box, L, for the reception of a nutmeg-grater.
From the above description it is obvious that a holder or stand for spices is provided in which they can be kept in such a manner as to be convenient for use and in the most compact and desirable form.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I. The combination of the chambered wheel A and holder G, provided with lid I, and having drawer J and box L arranged therewith, substantially as described, for the purpose speciiied.
2. The wheel A, hav'ing partition-plates G,
slotted center' tube, D, and spindle E, with stud b, in combination with the stand or holder G, substantially as and for the purpose specified. p
The above specification of my invention signed by me.
A. J. WALKER.
Witnesses:
J. N. MARSHALL, H. G. O. WEYMOUTH.
