MATTRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 788,874, dated. May 2, 1905.
' Application filed June 6, 1908. $erial No. 160,337.
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, JOHN B. ANDRES, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to mattresses, and more particularly to apparatus for making the same, whereby the filling of hair similar view showing the mattress inclosed in the ticking and the crates partly withdrawn therefrom, and Fig. 3 is a view in section of the completed mattress.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents a table or bench having fixed side walls 2 2 and removable end walls 3 3. The width of the table is ordinarily equal to a double, threequarters, or single bed mattress and the distance separating the end boards to the length of the mattress.
4 represents one of a pair of crates, which fit snugly in the inclosed space, one being placed therein as the first step in making up a mattress, as shown in Fig. 1.
A jointed frame 5, about the size of the crates above referred to, has stretched upon it a piece of strong fabric 6, such as burlap or the like. The fabric is provided for this purpose with slits 7 7, 860., through which the strips of the frame project, they being detachably connected at their ends by any suitable fastenings 8 8, &c.
In employing the above-described apparatus in the construction of a mattress the operation is as follows: After the end boards have been properly adjusted and the lower crate is placed in position a suitable quantity of hair or other material 9 for filling is evenly distributed upon one of the crates, and the burlap or other fabric on the stretcher-frame is placed thereon, then another layer of filling 10 is added, and after being properly distributed the second crate is placed upon the same. This completes the assembling or making up of the body of the mattress, and the next step is to enter the same in the ticking 11. The end of the ticking which has been left open for this purpose is drawn over the end of the table, and after the adjacent end wall has been removed the lillipg as assembled, together with the crates, &c., are pushed into the bag or ticking. The crates are then withdrawn. The ticking is closed at the end and stitched along each side to secure the burlap. The mattress is then tufted, as indicated at 12, in the usual manner, and the strips or members of the stretchenframe carrying the burlap are withdrawn through openings in the ticking left for this purpose, which are subsequently closed to complete the mattress.
Having therefore described my invention, 1 claim- In mattress-making apparatus, means for assembling and shaping the filling forming the body of the mattress and means for stretching a fabric interposed between layers of the filling, said means comprising a frame providing marginal support for the fabric and being removable therefrom.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN B. ANDRES.
