SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,513, dated April 18, 1905.

Be it known that I, 'TILLIAM J. H LDER, a citizen of the United States of America, residingat Rockwall, in the county of Rockwall and hicles, whereby an ordinary lamp may be employed to illuminate the roadway.

An object of the invention is to produce a device of this character in which the lantern or lamp is held to one side of the vehicle, wherebythe reflection or glare of the lamp is unobstructed.

A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby a lamp or lantern may be secured to the bottom of the body of a vehicle, and therefore be low down or near the ground in order to be more effective.

It is also the object of the invention'to produce a device of this character whereby the lantern can be easily applied to' the holder. but effectually held thereby.

The invention has also for an object means whereby the holder may be adjusted in its vertical position with relation'to the vehicle-body.

A further object of the invention is to provide clips removably secured to the holder proper, whereby different forms of'clips may be used, as may be necessary with different forms of lamps.

It is also an object of the invention to produce a device of this character that will be simple in construction, effective and convenient in operation, and economical to manufacture.

WVith the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective, a fragmentof a vehicle-body being shown with the holder applied, a portion of alamp being also shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of aclip, a portion of the holder being shown in section, illustrating a means of connection between the clip and the holder. Fig. 3 is a 'view in perspective of the supportingbracket, said bracket being shown detached. Fig. 4 is a view in perspective, illustrating a modified form of clip. Fig. 5 is a further modification of clip. Fig. 6 is a sectional View of the holder, showing the means ofsecuring the clip illustrated in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 illustrates a modified form of support which can be-utilized to accomplish the same result asthe two devices shown in Figs. 2 and 5. Fig. 8 is a view in side elevation of the form of'support illustrated in Fig. 7 the same being shown detached from the holder.

In the drawings, A indicates the side of a vehicle-body. Said vehicle-body is of any desired or preferred construction. Secured to the under side of the bottom of the vehiclebody and extending partly beyond the side A is. a bracket 1. Said bracket has an end flattened, as 2, provided with a series of apertures 3 near the edge. Through these apertures are adapted to pass screws, bolts, or other means for holding the bracket to the vehiclebody. The opposite endt of the' bracket is raised, and centrally of the raised portion is .an aperture 5, preferably square in cross-section.

The holder is of the shape of an inverted L and consists of the longer member 6 and the shorter member 7 extending from and formed integral with an end of .the longer member. The longer member may be at right angles with the shorter member; but in practice it is found advantageous to have it extend on a slant.

Formed on the free end of the longer mem her is a right-angulanhook 8, 'said hook being formed integral therewith. Midway the length of the longer member and near the top is secured a second right-angular hook 9. This hook is attached thereto by means of the screws, rivets, or bolts 11 passing therethrough and the longer member. These angular hooks are adapted to be in cross-section similar to the cross-section of the aperture 5 of the bracket and are adapted to fit therein. By the use of this plurality of hooks the height of the holder with relation to the vehicle-body can be adjusted or regulated.

The holder is provided with a series of ap' ertures 12, two in the shorter member at or near either side and one in the short member near the bottom. Within each aperture is adapted to fit or pass an end of a clip 13. This clip is threaded on an end and is engaged by the

14 and 15 on either side of the holder, whereby the clip is removably secured to the said holder.

In the preferred form of the invention each clip comprises a piece of wire bent upon itself to form the loop 16 and at its turned end is coiled, as at 17, to add additional resiliency to the loop. Each side of the loop is provided with the elongated oppositely-disposed depressions 18. This form of clip is used in conjunction with a lamp or lantern having the square frame, and it is to be observed that three clips are used, two for the top of the frame on either side of its center post and one for a side of the frame. Clips so constructed provide means for easily holding a lantern and provide means whereby a lantern can be readily applied or removed.

As shown in Fig. 1, a modified form of clip is shown. The holder A is provided with three clips, as in the previous form; but the clips differ in construction. Each clip B comprised a piece of flat metal bent around the holder and secured thereto by screws or other means C. The upper portion of the band D is straight, while the free portion of the lower band E is provided with a rightangular portion F, adapted to bear against the upper portion D. r The application of this device is thought to be clearly apparent from the drawings.

In Fig. 5 is shown a form adapted to be used in conjunction with railroad-lanterns or lanterns having a wire frame. On the longer member a of the holder a clip of either of the above forms (not shown) is employed. Through the apertures b in the shorter member pass the free ends d of the wire loop (2. These free ends are threaded and are adapted to be engaged by the nutsf, which removably secure them to the shorter member of the holder. This loop a is formed of a single piece of wire bent upon itself in such a way as to leave the passage-way g. This loop is adapted to encircle or embrace the top of the railroad-lantern, as can be readily understood.

As the clips shown in Fig. 1 and the loop in Fig. 5 are easily and readily removable, it

is seen how by removing the top clips in Fig. 1 the loop in Fig. 5 can be applied to the holder, or vice versa, or, in other words, by a changing of clips one holder may be employed for either a lantern with a square frame or with a lantern having a round frame.

As the lantern is held low down or near the ground, the adjustable feature of the holder is found very desirable in practice. In ordinary use the hook 9 is used; but if a portion of a roadway is reached that is rough or covered with obstructions or with snow the lower hook 8.may be employed. 7

The device shown in Fig. 7 comprises a support which is designed to embrace the lantern, and it also has clips which may engage the frame of a lantern, so that it can be used in the dual capacity indicated. This hanger consists of a strip of metal having its two ends X anchored in a bracket, such as a with the intermediate portion of the strip bent to form the clips Y, the coils y, and the clamp Z. The clips, it will be observed, answer the same function as the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 or as the clam ping-loops shown in Fig. 5.

The construction, operation, and ad vantages will, it is thought, be understood from the foregoing description, it being noted that various changes may be made in the proportions and details of construction for successfully carrying the invention into practice without departing from the scope thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the character described, a hold er approximately the shape of an inverted L, hooks formed on the stem of the holder having the depending free portions thereof approximately parallel with the stem, a clip carried by the stem near its lower end, and clips carried by the angular portion of the holder.

2. In adevice of the character described, a holder approximately the shape of an inverted L, hooks formed on the stem of the holder, a clip carried by the stem near its lower end. and clips carried by the-angular portion.

3. In a device of the characterdescribed, a holder approximately the shape of an inverted L, supporting means carried by the stem of the holder and lamp-engaging means carried by the stem and-angular portion of the holder.
