and GEORGE a .0 in u emit/t JOSEPH F. MERGEN, OF TIP'I'ON, AND GEORGE W. HOOVER, 0F OSBQR'NE, KANSAS.
A plication filed September 8, 1914,8eria1 No..860,728. Renewed august To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH F. Mancini W. HOOVER, citizens of the United States, residing a Tipton, in the county of Mitchell and State of Kansas, and Osborne, in the county of Osborne and State of Kansas, respectively, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Luggage-Carriers,'of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates in general to improvements in luggage carriers, and partype adapted for attach-.
ticularly to that ment to vehicles whereby to enable the disposition of, suit cases, egg cases and similar articles at a convenient place.
The objects in view are to provide a simple arrangement capable of being cheaply manufactured and which is particularly adapted for adjustment according to the character of the luggage to be carried thereby. The invention possesses numerous advanta as among which-are-its detachability to ena le its ready storage in the vehicle when not in use and the fact that it may be readily secured in position on the vehicle without the drilling of holes or otherwise making special provision for its attachment thereto.
These and such other objects as may hereina'fter appear are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and claimed. Reference will now be had to tion showing more clearly the details of conthe accompanying drawings forming a part struction, and "taken on the line';,3- 3 of Fig. 2.
Throughout the following detail description, and on the several figures of the draw- ,in s, similar parts ar'ereferred to by like re erence characters.
Referringto the drawings the invention consists of a pair of side members 1 and 2, each of which consists of an upright portion and a horizontal or base portion, said base portions being arranged side by side and corn nected together by means of a keeper 3 which is shown as riveted to the base portion of the Specification of Letters Patent.

member 2 as at 4. The extremity of the base portion of the member 2 is bent downwardly to form a clampin arm 5, the extreme end 6 of which is bent back upon itself in order to afford a substantial thickness fora threaded opening to accommodate a set screw 7.. The upper extremity of each of the side members is formed with an eye or opening 8, as most clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the draw ings so that a connecting member such as a strap 9 may be passed therethrough to enable the article disposed between the upright porposition therebetween.
In the actual. use or our device we preferably employ a pair of the devices hereinbefore described and each is secured to the motor vehicle through the instrumentality of the clamping arm 5-which is disposed, in a motor vehicle, on the running board 10. The set screws enable the attachment of the carrier at any point of the support and each dctions of the side members to be maintained in vice may obviously be edgusted with respect to the other at a proper interval to receive an object to be carried and designated in Fig. l. by the numeral 11. With the object disposed between the side members of each attachment a strap 9 is passed through the openings 8 in the uprights over the top of said object and said strap thereby holds the side members 1 and 2 at a proper adjusted position. Obviously and especially where the ob ject is of a height less than the side members or where it is of a compressible character, this adjustment by the strap is inherent to the tendency of the said side members to bind in the keeper 3 when the strap is tightened. Since the base portions of the side members have free sliding moveng.ent as afforded by the keeper 3 they may be adgusted to aocommodate for varying widths of articles by loosening of the strap and which latitude of adjustability is a very essential and advan tageous feature of our article-oi manufacture.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that the carrier is a very convenient article for tourists or farmers and. can be manufactured and marketed at a small ea:- pense becauseofits simplicity of construction.
- Having thus described the lIlY 3IiblD11,Wit&ii we claim as new ic:---
1. A luggage carrier comprising in com. bination a pair of corresponding side members each consisting of a metal bar bent laterally at its lower end toprovide a base pcrtion disposed in a horizontal plane, the base portions of the said side members being arranged edgewise with respect to one another for relative longitudinal movement, a connection intermediate the said side members including a keeper embracing the base portions of the side members, a fastening securing said keeper to the base portion of one of the side members near the outer end of the latter, said last named side member being extended downwardly and inwardly to provide a spaced clamping arm parallel with the base portion and a set screw mounted on said clamping arm and cooperative with the fastening and in alinement with the connection' between the said keeper and one of the side members for cooperation therewith in its clamping action.
2. A. luggage carrier attachment consisting of a pair of corresponding flat metal sections, each comprising an upright portion and a horizontal base portion, and said base portions being disposed side by side cdgewise to one another, the base portion of one of said side members being formed with a downwardly and inwardly extending clamping arm spaced therefrom, a keeper fastened to the side member having the clamping arm and connecting the base portions of said side members together for free sliding movement with respect to each other,
and a set screw carried by the clamping arm and coacting with said keeper to clamp the attachment to a running board or like part.
In testimonywhereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
