SAD-IRON HEATER.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, COLIN MULTON Bns'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lamar. in the county of Darlington and State of South Carolina, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Iron Heaters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in that class of small portable sad-iron heaters which comprise a base part adapted to sit upon a stove or to contain fuel for independent heating and a tapered or pyramidal top part, which is attached to such base and against which the irons rest when being heated.

The improvement is embodied in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of my heater. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same; Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the base part of the heater. Fig. {i is a perspective view of the top part of the heater. Fig.5 is a bottom plan view of the base of theheater.

The base A of the heater is preferably square, but may have any other suitable polygonal form, and the top part B has a lower portion "7), (see Fig. 2,) adapted to fit loosely Within the base, and a pyramidal top portion 6, against which the irons rest when being heated, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2.

A removable pyramidal cap or smoke-flue C is applied to the top part B. All these parts are constructed of sheet-iron or any other suitable sheet metal. The base A is provided with air-openings a, also with side handles a for the purpose of convenience in transportation. A removable grate D(see Figs. 2 and 5) is arranged horizontally within the base A and supported upon rods whose ends pass through the sides of the base and are suitably secured thereto. This grate is preferably constructed of sheet metal, provided with perforations, as indicated. As shown in Fig. 2, the pyramidaltop part B rests directly upon the grate D and thus holds it in place. The

top portion of the base is outturned at (4 thus forming a series of flanges which serve as supports for the irons, as indicated in Fig. 2. The top B is provided on opposite sides with a loop 6, (see Figs. 1 and 2,) adapted for reception of a suitable tool or instrument for the purpose of raising and removing the top when heated as occasion may require.

In practical use of my improved heater the top part B may be removed and fuel placed upon the grate D, or the cap portion C may be removed and fuel may be inserted through the opening in the pyramidal .part. The airinlets a are provided with swinging covers,

WV hen the fuel has reached a due degree of combustion, the pyramidal part against which the flame and heated gases impinge will become duly heated, and irons supported thereon, as indicated, will in turn become quickly heated. It is apparent that this result may be obtained very economically or with the combustion of but a small quantity of fuel.

The heater is made in such proportion that it is easily portable, and it may be set upon a stove or stove-opening or upon any other support, as convenience requires. The two parts A B are cheaply yet strongly constructed, and the detachability of these and the grate D provides for convenient manipulation when the heater is in use and for convenient separation when it is required to clean the grate.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,,is.

1. The improved sad-iron heater, comprising a hollow polygonal base having vertical sides provided with air-inlets and flared at the upper edge,an interior grate-support, and a grate resting loosely thereon, and a removable top part having a lower portion, which is polygonal corresponding to the base, and rests upon the grate, and a top portion which is pyramidal and truncated, substantially as described.

2. The improved sad-iron heater compris ing the hollow vertical sheet-iron base having a flared top and an interior grate, and the hollow sheet-iron top part having a pyramidal portion and a base which is vertical and adapted to fit removably within the aforesaid base, and means for supporting the top in said base 'in the manner described.
