UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
FRANK ADAMS AND URIAH J. VIRGIN, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
APORTABLE sTovE 0R FURNACE.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 422,899, dated March 11, 1890*.
' Application tiled July 11, 1889. Serial No. 317,164. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK ADAMS and URIAH J. VIRGIN,`of New Orleans,in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Stoves or Furnaces; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven` tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in portable stoves and furnaces, the object being to provide a light and simple heating apparatus capable of being easily taken apart and put together without injury and having but few parts, such as may be readily renewed at any time it shall be necessary; and with this end in view our invention consists in asmall stove or furnace having afire-pot, a heatingchamber, and other features of construction and combinations of parts, as willbe hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the lire-pot frame or basket, and Fig. 3 is a detached view of the top of the stove or furnace.
A represents a cylindrical drum inclosing the heating-chamber A', and Bis the cast-iron top placed over this drum. This top has several holes O with removable covers, the same as an ordinary stove-top.
The basket or frame D consists of a ring l at the top, a sheet-metal bottom 2, and three or more bars 3 3, connecting said parts-that The ring l is riveted or otherwise secured to an inwardlyprojecting ange 4 on the lower portion of the drum. One or more draft passages 5 are formed in this basket to insure a free circulation of air. A clay or earthen fire-pot 6, having a perforated bottom 7 for the circulation of air upward, is held in the basket with its bottom 7 a little distance above the bottom 2 of the basket or frame, in order to leave space for the air and also for the accumulation of ashes. The whole rests upon a tripod or suitable support 8, which holds the stove elevated from the floor, so that no danger of the latter becoming burned or blistered results, and so as to place the top of the stove Within convenient reach of the person usin git.
The drum is generally provided with handles 9 9, by which it is easily lifted from its stand or support or placed back thereon.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention, and hence we do not wish to limit ourselves to the particular construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is
1. In a portable stove or furnace, the combination, with a drum and basket or frame secured thereto, of a fire-pot located inside the drum and basket, and a support upon which the said parts rest, substantially as set forth.
2. In a portable stove or furnace, the combination, with a cylindrical drum having a top with openings therein and covers, of a basket or frame secured to the drum, a tlrepot located in the basket and the whole removably held on a tripod or other suitable support, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
