MARGARETHA STEINEKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
KITCHEN APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 20, 1913.
Application led July 8, 1911. Serial No. 637,519.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MAnGARE-THA STEINEKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kitchen Appliances, of`
which the following is a description.
My invent-ion belongs to that general class of devices known as kitchen appliances, or the like, and relates particularly to a combined holder for cooking utensils, a toaster, and a heater for sad irons or the like, and has among its objects the production of a device thatis simple, durable, convenient, elicient, economical and satisfactory, that may be manufactured at small cost and used wherever found applicable.
The device is particularly adapted for use on small ranges, gas stoves and the like.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and de-y scribed, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device with the lining, iron support and closure removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional viewv of the device taken substantially on line 2, 2 of Fig. 1, with the lining, iron support and closure in position. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the iron support and closure.
Referring to the drawing, I construct a shell or casing consisting of a top 1 and any desired number of sides, a plurality of sides 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, being shown, the sides being preferably flat or straight and inclined inwardly at the top, forming substantially the frustum of a pyramid. The top 1 is pro-k vided with an opening or hole 2 therethrough, and a portion of the sides, for eX- ample, the sides 3, 4L, 5 and 6, are provided with a plurality of openings 8 therethrough, which may be made of any form, as shown they are in the form of angular slots. One side, as shown, side 7, is provided with an opening 11 therethrough, the device being of such size that the opening may be made large enough for the `insertion o-f a sad iron through the opening 11. Arranged about the lower edge of the sides is a flange or base 9, which is provided with a lip or upturned portion 10, the flange, however, op'
posite the side 7 being preferably flat, as shown at 12, or without the lip, so that the iron may be easily inserted through the opening. The casing or shell described may be made of any suitable material in any desired way, thin sheet metal being very satisfactory. and preferred for the purpose.
`Within the casing or shell, and removable therefrom, is arranged a lining, preferably of fire-proof insulating material, such as asbestos orthe like, the same being shaped to conform to thev inner contour of the outer casing. As shown, the lining 15 is reinforced by wire netting 16, or its equivalent for t-he purpose, and vis provided with an opening 17 in the top, registering with the opening`2 in the outer casing and with an opening 1S, and registering with the opening 11 in the front or side 7. The lining being` made to closely fit the outer casing and resting upon the top of the range or gas burner, does not require means for securing it in position, hence I have not shown the same. However, if desired, the same may be secured in position in any desired way.
The sad irons are inserted and removed or carried-within the casing by a support or carrier 20, which affords a very convenient way -of positioning it within the device, or removing the same. As shown, the carrier is provided wit-h an extended part 22,V upon w'hich'is arranged a handle 21 of suitable insulating material, as for example, wood, so that the handle always remains cool. The carrier may also be provided with lugs 24, which pre-vent the iron from slipping off the carrier in inserting or removing the same from the heater. Any suitable closure may be provided for the opening 11, as shown, I providea partition 23 on the .carrier 20, the same being inclined slightly to correspond with the inclination of the sides of the casing. By providing the closure 23 of the carrier the same is positioned before the opening 11 at the same time that the iron is inserted. The iron carrier 20 and lhandle also forms a very convenient device forv handling the casing when hot, so it may be transferred from place to place. In this case, if there is no iron on the carrier, the same may be inserted in the opening 11 and the casing be lifted or taken where desired.
In use the iron may be heated within the casing, and at the same time a kettle or other cooking utensilfmay be placed upon the top 1, so that cooking and heating the iron may take place at the same time. The
of burners or heating space on the range is` limited. For toasting the lining 15 may be removed, the bread placed around the perforated sides, where it is evenly toasted, the same being supported from the base and prevented from slipping off by the lip l0. The base or flange therefore serves as a support for the bread during the toasting, as well as a reinforcement. While toasting any operation of cooking may take place on the top l, and if desired, an iron may be heated at the same time. However, when heating irons, I preferably position the lining so that all the heat .is conta.' ned within the device.
I have shown a simple form-of sad iron 25 in the dotted lines, provided with a handle, it being understood that this merely illustrates an iron, as ordinarily it is preferred to use irons having removable handles, so that the handle is not heated while heating the iron. By providing a separate carrier for the iron the same may be very conveniently handled, and there is practically no weight or strain upon the other parts of the device. The device is applicable for use on ranges, gas stoves, gasolene stoves, or similar devices, and as before mentioned, is particularly convenient where the heating space on the stove or the Copies of this patent may be obtained for number of burners is limited to one, or only severa-l.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself t0 the exact form, construction o-r combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.
`What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In an appliance of the kind described, the combination of a sheet metal shell, comprising a plurality of upwardly and inwardly inclined flat sides, a top provided with an opening therethrough, one of said sides provided with an opening therethrough, and the remainder of said sides provided with perforations therethrough, a removable lining for said shell corresponding substantially in contour therewith, and having an opening through one side thereof arranged to register with the opening through said shell side, means for supporting a sad iron within said shell, comprising an iron support provided with a suitable handle and with a closure for said opening in said shell.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARGARETI-IA STEINEKE.
