Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, DAVID CANOVSKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined \Vashboilers and Cookers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in clothes-boilers and water heaters, and more particularly to that type wherein the water is heated by direct application of heat to the walls of the chamber or compartment holding the water.

An object of the invention is to provide a water heater of the class described, which will have the fire or combustion chamber located in the central part of the water chamber.

Another object is to provide a removable basket or container, which is adapted to be housed within the water chamber, when the structure is to be used for cooking, and which will cooperate with the combustion chamber in such a manner so that when the basket is withdrawn from the water chamher the cover of the chamber will also be withdrawn.

A further object is to provide a portable boiler of the class described, which will be efiicient in use, and inexpensive to manufacture.

Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.

In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,

Figure 1 is a vertical section of my combined clothes-boiler and water heater;

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of an auxiliary combustion chamber or stack partly in section;

Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the boiler and heater;

Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the guard collar positioned about the upper end of the combustion chamber;

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the basket or container;

Fig. 6 is a side elevation, partly in section of the combined clothes-boiler and water heater, showing in dotted lines the basket removed and cooperating to raise the cover of the combustion chamber, and

Like characters of reference are used throughout the several views to designate corresponding parts.

The combined clothes boiler and water heater has a cylindrical wall 1, whose upper periphery 2 is turned over for strengthenin purposes. Draft openings 8 are'forme d around the lower end of said wall 1, adjacent the bottom thereof.

A removable receiving-bottom 4 is provided with the locking shoulders 5, which cooperate and engage with the shoulders 6 on the wall 1, for locking the bottom in position. The bottom 7 is fixed in position above draft openings 3, and forms the-bottom of the water boiler. 1

The top 8 is provided with a depending flange 9, which fits within the top of the wall or casing 1.

A cylindrical opening is formed in the central portion of the top 8, and has its edge or periphery turned up to form the seat 9'. I

A tubular fire or combustion chamber 10 is inserted through the central opening in the top, and is provided at its lower end with the grate 11, upon which the combustible material is placed. A cover 12 is adapted to fit tightly over the combustion chamber 10, and engages the flanged seat 9.

Knobs or handles 13 are placed on the tops or covers 8 and 12.

The auxiliary stack or tube 14: is provided with a handle 15, and has its ends flared as at 16, to readily engage and fit over the top of the combustion chamber 10, so as to secure more draft when desired. 1

On the outside of the boiler wall 1, are positioned the handles 17, by which the boiler may be moved.

A guard or heat protector 18 is provided to slip over the end of the combustion chamber 10, to space whatever is in the boiler from the hot tube. Thus when the water level is low the guard 18 prevents the clothes being boiled from coming in contact with the hot surface of the combustion chamber and thereby burning the same.

The basket or container 19, is formed with a perforated bottom, and has a central opening 20 therein, which slides over the combustion tube or cylinder 10. The walls or sides of the basket are made so that water may readily pass into said basket, but whatever is in the basket can not fall out. This basket 19 is provided with the handles 21, by which the basket may be removed.

The operation of the combined clothesboiler and water heater may be summed up as follows:

The kindling or combustible material is first placed in the chamber 10, after which water is placed within the cylindrical wall 1, and lastly the clothes. It will be apparent that should the clothes come in contact with the wall of the chamber 10, above the water level, they would become burned. Therefore, the guard or heat protector cylinder 18 is placed between the clothes and the wall of the chamber 10. If additional draft is desired, the auxiliary stack 14 is employed. When the device is used. for cooking or preserving the basket 19 is placed in position within the wall 1, and around the chamber 10. After the articles carried by the basket are cooked the handle 22 is inserted in the small handles 21, and the basket lifted out. I

The bottom 4 may be taken out, and the ashes removed when necessary or desired.

It will be understood that many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. Ina water heater, the combination of a cylindrical receptacle, a double bottom therein, one ofv said bottoms being removable, a combustion chamber within said receptacle, a basket or container spaced from and about said chamber and adjacent the walls of said receptacle, and cooperating means for removing said basket and the cover of said chamber at the same time.

2. In a water heater, the combination with a cylindrical receptacle, a double bottom therein,*one of said bottoms being removable, a combustion chamber positioned in the center of said receptacle, a basket adapted to seat within said receptacle, a top for said receptacle, said top having a central opening formed with an upturned seat, a top for said combustion chamber, said top engaging said seat, and cooperating with said basket when the basket is withdrawn.

8. In a water heater, the'combination of a cylindrical receptacle, a double bottom therein, a combustion chamber, a removable basket or receptacle surrounding said chamber, a top for said receptacle, and means cooperating with said basket and combustion chamber, whereby the basket and the top of the combustion chamber may be lifted from said receptacle simultaneously.

In a water heater, the combination with a one piece receptacle and bottom, a removable bottom spaced from said first mentioned bottom, a combustion chamber, a grate'in said chamber, an auxiliary stack adapted to engage said chamber, a removable basket or receptacle having a central opening in the bottom and surrounding said chamber and cooperating therewith, whereby when said basket is removed the top of the chamber will also be removed, so that the contents of the basket will not spill or drop therefrom.
