J'HN W.'GRAIG,0F 'KNOXV'ILLE ILLINOIS Letters Patent No. 78,652, dated June 9, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRAOES FOR BITS.
@the flgemle nfereb tn in these Entert @anni rmt mating gmt tige nun.
To ALL WHoM IT MAY ooncnnn:
Be it known that I, JOHN IV. CRAIG, of Knoxville, in the county of Knox, and State of Illinois, have invented :t new and improved Device for Holding Bits in Braces; and I-do hereby declare that the following is n. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make anduse the same,
:reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming-partof this specification.
vThis .invention'relates to the manner in which boring-purposes.l
And it consists in a fastening-lever and a spring-catch, applied to the brace, and arranged in- @he manner hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents a section ofthe brace, with a back viewof the fastening-lever and spring-catch.
Figure 2, a-sectional side view of the same, the section being through the line :v :z: of 5g. 1.`
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
A represents-the brace.
B is the bit.
:C is the fastening-lever.
D is the springscatch, which holds the lever C in'place when the bit is fastened.
The brace is slotted or recessed out on one side suiioientl in the drawing.
The lever is hung or jointed to thebrace by a pin, at a, and, 'on its inner side, toe, b, which tits into a corresponding recess in theshank ot' tb ing, with the bit fastened.
When in this position, the lever is held in place by the springcatch This spring is a plate, through which the bit passes, and it is fastened to the end ofthe brace by the screws seen at d.
The out'er end ot this spring forms a thumb-piece, f, which is raised by the thumb when the bit is liberatediV c represents a spring, which is attached to the brace, and which bears against the fastening-lever with a auger-bits and other kinds of bits are held in braces for it` has a projecting lip or e bit, when it stands, as represented in the drawconstant pressure, 'when the bit is fastened as seen'.
When the spring-catch D is raised, the lcver is thrown back 'by the tension of the spring e, and then the lever acts with a short purchase. to raise the bit from its socket, thus preventing all trouble, 'in consequence of the sticking of the bit, as is commonK with the ordinary brace. i' v By this arrangement, the bit is firml with the greatest ease. I
Having thus described my-invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The device for holding bits in braces, consisting of the pivoted spring-lever C, formed with the toe b, whichengages with the bit,"the free end ot' said lever adapted to catch under the spring-catch D, secured upon the' end of the brace, and provided with a round hole for the passage of the bit, all constructed and arranged to operate as herein shown and described.
y held in its socket at all times when in use, and liberated therefrom JOHN W. CRAIG.
Witnesses:
F. G; SANBURN, LYM'ANA. JAoxsoN,
y to admit the lower portion of the lever, as seen
