Description
SANFORD V. HALL, OF B'ICGRAWVILLE, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 78,593, dated June 2, 1868.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.

'lO ALL WI'IOM IT MAY CONCERN: y
Bc it known that I, SANFORD V. HALL, of McGrar-vville, Cortland county,rState ofNew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washinghachines; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of-this specification, in which- Fignre I is a perspective view, Figure II o. [luted roller,
Figure III a grooved side-gauge, and
Tl) enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my washing-machine in any of the known forms, having in the bottom a rub-board,y a, iluted and curved, and to the sides of 4the rub-board are attached two standards, 5 b, with a horizontal cross-beam or roller, c. To this roller is attached the swinging frame d d, and to the lower end of which swinging frame is attached the Huted roller-E, as exhibited by Fig.l II.
Over the roller I place the cap-piece f, Fig. IV, with lower side curved, the object and use of which are to prevent the water from being thrown upward by the roller when in motion.
Connected with the swinging frame are two spiral springs, g g, made of wire or other suitable material, extending from ,the roller e nearly to the centre of the swinging frame, the object being to regulate the pressure of the uted roller upon the rub-board.
The standards Z1 b are screwed to the machine, as shown at 7i it.
For the purpose of lowering or elevating the standards b b, I employ a. metal gauge, t t, Fig. III,-whicl2 is attached to the machine, and a corresponding gauge is attached to each standard, and, by means oita slot in the standards b they are raised or lowered as desired.
By Ameans of the spiral springsg g, the swinging frame and the roller 'are m'oved .backwards and forwards with greater ease, and the grooved side-gauges lz h allow the machine to be adjusted, so as to wash the largest or smallest article of clothing without inconvenience.
`What I claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe spiral springs g g, the groo'ved side-gauges L IL, and the cap-piece f, in combination with the lutetl roller e and rub-board a, all constructed and operated substantially as described. v
SANFORD V. HALL.
