DELL F. STARKWEATHER, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO BISSELL CARPET SWEEPER COMPANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN,
A CORPORATION.
DEVICE FOR ATTACHING HANDLES TO CARPET-SWEEPER BAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 785,027, dated March 14, 1905.
Application tiled April 1, 1902. Serial No. 100,964.
T0 all whom it may concern:
vBeit known that I,DELL F. STARKWEATHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Attaching Handles to Carpet-Sweeper Bails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in the manner of attaching handles to sockets; and it is more particularly adapted for the attachment or connecting of a wooden handle to the bail of a carpet-sweeper.
The objects of the invention are to simplify the construction of the attaching device and also to provide a durable covering or casing for the wooden portion of the handle and to prevent the handle from working loose in the socket, the invention itself consisting in providing a metallic strip of suitable material adapted to surround and snugly fit the screwthreaded portion of the handle and to form a covering and protection for the screw-threaded end of the handle and to engage therewith in such a manner that it will not become Iemoved therefrom. These yobjects are accomplished by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective View of the portion of a wooden handle with the metallic strip secured to the screw-threaded portion of the handle. Fig. 2 shows the form of the strip when it is bent up ready to apply to the handle and before the screw-threads are formed thereon, a portion of the strip being cut away for the purpose of more fully illustrating its structure. Fig. 3 shows an end view of a handle with the metallic covering applied thereto, the end of the handle showing the modified form of slot. Fig. 4 shows a B shows the metallic inclosure after the same has been applied to the screw-threaded portion of the handle and pressed into engagement with the threaded portion of said handle. In constructing and applying this device the strip is bent in the .form of a shell provided with a slot, (shown by D.) The slot D may extend entirely through the handle, as shown in Fig. 1, or may extend partially through. as shown in Fig. 3.' The metallic shell is first bent into the form shown in Fig. 2, the edges C being bent inwardly,
so as to extend toward the center of the cylinder or circle. The shell is then applied to the threaded end of the handle, the two edges C being inserted in the slot D. When the pressure is applied in order to produce the screw-thread on the shell and to cause the same to fit into and engage with the screwthreads on the handle, the bent portion C will be driven into the slot D and the cylindrical portion of the shellv pressed into the threaded portion of the handle, so as to make a complete and perfect engagement in the form shown in Fig. 1. A handle constructed in this manner would readily engage with the screw-threaded socket, and as the handle is turned so as to cause the screw-threads of the handle to engage with the screw-threads of the socket there will be a tendency to still further clasp the shell B upon the handle.
Having thus describedy my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A carpet-sweeper handle having a tapering screw-threaded end provided with a slot and a metallic reinforcement forming a permanent l part of the handle, said reinforcement conl sisting of a strip of suitable material surl rounding and Conforming in Contour to said screw-threaded end and having the ends thereof extending` in said slot and the abutting portions thereof iiush.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Wltmesses.
