HARNESS-BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,804, dated March 14, 1905.

Be it known that I, WoLEGoNG OBERMEIR, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Lost Lake, county of Dodge, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to attachments for harness-saddles; and the object thereof is the provision of novel means which will support the rein or the hitching-strap when not in use and obviously may be used as a checkreinholder, if necessary.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents the device as applied tol the harness-saddle. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the device.

Referring more specially to the drawings, 1 represents the bottom part of the frame of the buckle, which is provided at 2 with lugs on which the upper part of the frame 3 is adapted to pivot. The parts l and 3 are connected together by a peculiarly-shaped pintle 4, which will be hereinafter described, and surrounding said pintle is a spring which is adapted to bear against the upper portion 3 and thelower portion l, so as to hold their forward parts or the jaws of the device in close proximity. The upper part 3 is provided with a rearward extension adapted to engage a V-shaped extension 6, formed on the lower part l to limit the movement of the parts. The upper part of the frame of the buckle 3 at its forward end is curved upward at 7 to admit doubling of the strap, which is adapted to be inserted within the jaws.

The pintle4 is of U-shaped construction, defning the legs 8 and 9, the former of which forms the pivotal connection between the parts l and 3. The latter part 9 is parallel with the leg 8 and is adapted to receive the folded ends of a strap, which are slipped sidewise into the buckle, the loop of said strap engaging the leg 9. lt will be understood that when the driving-rein is held there will be two straps looped within the jaws and engaged by the leg 9 of the pintle 4.

The device is secured in any suitable mauner to the harness-saddle, but may be secured to any other part of the harness.

I have shown a strap 10 engaging a crossbar 11 at the rear end of the part 1. It will be only necessary when it is desired to fasten the strap within the attachment to depress the extension 5, which opens the jaws of the device, and slip the loop of the strap over the leg` 9 of the pintle 4. rlhe strap is removed in the same manner.

Having thus described my invention` what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A rein-holder comprising upper and lower members hinged together, and an independent hook between said members adapted to receive the folded ends of the rein and to conneet the members.

2. A rein-holder comprising upper and lower members, and means pivoting said members, said means adapted to receive the folded ends of a rein.

3. A rein-holder comprising relatively movable members, means pivoting said members together, and means integral with said pivoted means adapted to support the folded ends of the rein.

4. A rein-holder comprising two relatively movable members having jaws, means pivoting said movable members together, and means between said jaws and integral with said pivoted means adapted to receive the folded ends of a rein.

5. A rein-holder comprising relatively movable upper and lower members, means pivoting the two members together, an extension on the lower member adapted to limit the movement of the upper member, means for normally holding said upper member in engagement with said extension, and means integral with said pivoting means adapted to receive the folded ends of a strap.

6. A rein-holder comprising upper and lower members, apertured lugs on said lower member, means pivoting said upper member to said lugs, an extension on said lower member, means surrounding said pivotal means and adapted to engage said upper member 'for holding it in engagement with the extension, and means integral with said pivotal means adapted to receive the folded ends of a strap.
