Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sherman, in the county of (irayson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Pressing Trousers; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for pressing clothing, more particularly trousers or pantaloons.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and ei'licient device of this character by means of which a pair of trousers may be pressed and creased, so that all bagginess and wrinkles will be removed from the same.

\Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination. and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a trousers-press constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Each of said half-sections consists of two parts 5 and 6, which are hingedly connected, as shown at 7. The parts 6 are comparatively short and are adapted to engage the lower portion or bottoms of the legs of a pair of trousers T which is to be pressed between the boards 1 and 2. The

The opposite ends of said springs are detachably connected, by means 01'' pivoted bails 13, to the opposite ends of said cross-bars 19.. it will be seen that when it is desired to remove a pair ol trousers from the press the bails 13 are swung outwardly and downwardly to disengage the springs 10, and the latter and also the blocks 9 are then removed from the upper side of the pressure-board 2.

In placing a pair of trousers in the press their lowerends or bottoms are first clamped beneath the parts 6 of the half-sections 3 and at and, before the remaining parts 5 of said half-seetions are clamped in position the upper portions of said trousers are stretched upon the base 1 and held in such position by a clamping means located at the upper end of the base, so that the sections 5 may be properly engaged with the main portions of the trouserslegs to permit the same to be thoroughly and neatly pressed. The said fastening or clamping means, as shown, comprises two clips 14, which are in the form of jaws 15, pivotally mounted, as at 16, upon the outer ends of bails 17, which are pivotally mounted, as at 18, upon the under side of the base 1. These jaws 15 are adapted to engage the front and rear edges or creases of the trousers T and are held in engagement therewith by a swinging transverse bar or rod 19. Said bar has one of its ends pivotally connected by a bail 0r loop 20 to one end of a spring 21, which is secured transversely upon the under side of the base 1. At the opposite end of said spring is a pivoted bail 22, which is adapted to be engaged by a swinging or pivoted catch 23, provided at one end of said bar 19. Said bar is thus detachably secured by means of the catch 23 and the bail 22, and it is held firmly in engagement with the clips 14 by means of said spring 21. The central portion of the under side of the bar or rod 19 is recessed, as shown at 2&, at a point where the seams and bagginess of the upper portion of the trousers occur.

In order to dampen the trousers to more effectively press the same and form the usual creases therein, I attach along one edge of the base 1 a dampening cloth or sheet 26. Said cloth is similar in shape to the pressure-board 2 and is adapted to be placed between the two legs of the trousers, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 ofthe drawings. The connection of the cloth to the base may be efiected in any desired manner; but I preferably form in one edge of the cloth a series of eyelets 27, which are detachably engaged with hooks or headed studs 28, provided in said edge of the base 1.

The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. In placing a pair of trousers in the press they are first placed upon the base-board l, and the dampening-cloth 26 is then inserted between the legsof said trousers. The half- sections 3 and 4 of the nessure-board are then placed in position and their lower parts 6 are clamped, as shown, upon the bottoms of the trousers. The parts 5 of said half-sections are then swung upwardly out of the way, while the upper portions of the trousers are stretched upon the base 1 and are clamped thereon by the clips 1% and the transverse clamping-bar 19. After the legs of the trousers have been stretched out smoothly the parts 5 of the halfsections 3 and 1 are then swung downwardly and secured in position, as shown in Fig- 1 of the drawings, by the strips 9 and spring 10.

\Vhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A trousers-press comprising a base, a presser-board having longitudinally-divided sections, blocks to bear on said sections and being hollowed on their inner sides to enable said sections to be disposed angularl y with respect to each other, and means operative on said blocks to clamp said presser-board sections on the base.

2. A trousers-press comprising a base, a pressure-board divided longitudinally into two detached parts or sections, concave-convex elements disposed transversely upon said pressure-board, springs upon said elements, and fastening means connecting said springs to said base to clamp said pressure-board upon said base, substantially as described.

4. A trousers-press comprising a base, a pressure-board divided longitudinally into two detached parts or sections, concavo-convex elements disposed transversely upon said pressure-board, springs upon said elements, longitudinally-extending springs upon said elements having one of their ends pivotally connected to said base and detachable fasteners for securing the opposite ends of said springs to said base, substantially as described.

5.
