SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,286, dated February 21, 1905. Application filed July 2, 1904. Serial No. 215,121.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS T. KNORZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a newand useful Trousers-Presser, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to means for pressing trousers, and has for its object to provide an improved device for the support of trousers when not in use and arranged to stretch and crease the same, and thereby maintain them in proper shape.

Another object of the invention is to facilitate the application and removal of the device and to permit of the same being folded into compact form for convenience in transportation and storage when not required for use.

It is furthermore designed to arrange the device so as to constitute a hanger for the trousers without taking up any more room than an ordinary pair of trousers in order that the device may be especially adapted for use in wardrobes, closets, and the like.

WVith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the present device applied to a pair of trousers. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device detached. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken through one of the stretcher members. Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal sectional view to show the detachable connection between the sections of one of the stretcher members.

Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in each and every figure of the drawings.

The present device embodies front and rear stretchers formed of wood or metal, with the front stretcher made up of duplicate parallel members, each of which consists of longitudi- 5 nally-alined sections 1 and 2, which have their inner ends detachably connected by a slipjoint consisting of a socket 3, carried by one section, with the adjacent end of the other section removably fitted therein. The back stretcher is made u p of duplicate parallel members, with each member, including sections 4 and 5, connected by a slip-joint 6, withthe section 5 diverged or inclined away from the corresponding section 2 of the front stretcher. 6 At each end of each stretcher and upon the same side of the device there is a boss or shoulder 7, with cross-bars 8 and 9 extending across the stretcher and provided with longitudinal slotted portions 10 and 11, respectively, lying 5 across the bosses or shoulders, with clampingscrews 12 and 13 passed through the slotted portions and engaging the shoulders or bosses to detachably connect the cross-bars with the stretchers.

The members of each pair of stretchers are detachably connected by means of substantially Ll-shaped spring clips or clamps 14, which embrace the members and engage wedges or inclined portions of one of the members, preferably consisting of wires 15, each of which has one end driven into or otherwise connected with the member substantially flush with the outerface thereof,from which the wire inclines outwardly to its opposite end, where it is bowed inward l y toward the stretcher member, as at 16, with its extremity driven into or otherwise connected to the stretcher, thereby to form a shoulder for supporting the adjacent end of the wire in an elevated position and 8 5 thereby providing a wedge or'inclined face for engagement by the arm of the clips or clamps.

It is preferred to provide the inner side of one arm of each of the clamps with a transverse notch or seat 17 to receive the adjacent wire, 9 and thereby prevent accidental outward displacement.

In using the device the front and back portions of a pair of trousers 18 are inserted between the members of the front and back stretchers, after which the clamps 1 are applied, so as to snugly grip the trousers between the stretchers, and thereby produce front and back creases in the trousers. After the stretchers have been fitted to the trousers the cross-bars 8 and 9 are applied to the setscrews and the stretchers drawn apart to place the desired tension upon the trouscrs,'and then the set-screws are tightened, so as to rigidly connect the cross-bars and the stretchers to maintain the tension upon the trousers. It will here be noted that the sections of the rear stretcher are inclined away from the front stretcher in order that they may follow the direction of the upper rear portion of the legs of the trousers and insure an effective creasing at this point.

A bail-shaped hanger 19 is loosely engaged with the front cross-bar 8 for engagement with a hook or other support to hang up the stretcher and the trousers when the latter are not in use.

From the foregoing description it will be understood that the present device may be readily applied to a pair of trousers, so as to place the desired tension thereon to stretch the same and at the same time to produce the desired crease in the frontand back of each leg, and it also constitutes a hanger for the trousers. Moreover, when the device is not in use the cross-bars maybe disconnected and the stretchersections detached, whereupon the device may be folded into compact form to enable it to be conveniently packed in a trunk, suit-case, or the like, which 'renders tllie device particularly convenient when trave ing,

Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the class described comprising a pair of substantially parallel stretcher members to embrace the front portions of a pair of trousers, a separate pair of stretcher members to embrace the rear portions of the trousers, individual means to clamp together each pair of stretcher members independently. of the other pair, cross-bars extending between the pairs of stretchers, and means to detachably connect the cross-bars with the pairs of stretchers.

2. A device of the class described comprising frontand back stretchers, each of which includes substantially parallel members to rev ceive the trousers therebetween and each member formed in longitudinally-alined detachably-connected sections, means to clamp together the members of each stretcher, and

' cross-bars detachably connecting the front and back stretchers.

3. A device of the class described comprising front and rear stretchers each of which includes substantially parallel members to receive the trousers therebetween, and each member formed of longitudinal sections having a slip-joint connection, means to clamp together the members of each stretcher, and cross bars connecting the front and back stretchers.

4:. A- device of the class described comprising front and back stretchers each of which includes substantially parallel members to receive the trousers therebetween, one member of each stretcher having wedge portions, substantially U -shaped clamps embracing the members and engaging the wedge portions to clamp the members together, and cross-bars connecting the stretchers, one of the stretchers being adjustable upon the cross-bars toward and away from the other stretcher.

5. A device of the class described comprising front and back stretche rs each of which includes substantially parallel members to' receive the trousers therebetween, one member of each stretcher having a pair of wedge portions which are inclined longitudinally outward in opposite directions, substantially U- shaped clamps embracing the members and engaging the wedge portions and removable when moved to the inner ends of the respective wedge portions, and cross-bars connecting the stretchers.

6. A device of the class described comprising front and back stretchers each of which includes substantially parallel members to re ceive the trousers therebetween, means to clamp together the members of each stretcher,

cross-bars connecting the stretchers, and means to ad ust one of the stretchers longi-v tudinally upon the cross-bars.

7. A device of the class described comprising front and back stretchers each of which includes substantially parallel members to receive the trousers therebetween, means to clamp together the members of each stretcher, cross bars to connect the stretchers, each cross bar having a longitudinal slot, and clamping-screws carried by one of the stretch ers and working'in the slots of the respective cross-bars to adjustably clamp the stretcher thereon. 8. A device of the class described comprising front and back stretchers each of which includes substantially parallel members to re: ceive the trousers therebetween, means to clamp together the members of each stretcher, terminal cross-bars connecting the stretchers and provided at opposite ends with longitudinal slots, and clamping-screws carried by each stretcher and engaging the slots of the respective cross-bars to adjustably connect the stretchers with said cross-bars.

9. A device of the class described comprising front and back stretchers, each stretcher being made up of a pair of substantially parallel members to receive the trousers therebetween, means to clamp together the members of each stretcher, and cross-bars connecting the front and back stretchers, one of the stretchers being adjustable upon the crossbars toward and away from the other stretcher.
