THREAD HOLDER AND CUTTER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,543, dated February 14, 1905.
Application filed July 30, 1904. Serial No. 218,854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUDORA M. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United. States, residing at l/Vilkesbarre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Thread Holder and Cutter for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined thread holding and cutting attachment for sewingmachines, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efiicient device of this character capablev of being readily attached to the presser-bar of the machine and by means of which the thread may be conveniently cut or severed and the end thereof securely held in position, thereby preventing unthreading or tangling of the thread when work is resumed.
A further object of the invention is to arrange the cutting edge of the knife in horizontal alinement with the clamping-arms of the holder, so that when the thread is introduced in the latter and drawn rearwardly the free end of the thread will engage the knife, while the opposite end thereof will be re tained between the clamping arms of the holder.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

The device consists of a supporting-clip 5,
the spring- arms 6 and 7 of which are bent arms 10 and 11, said arms being arranged at right angles to the presser-bar and having their free ends spaced apart and curved in opposite directions, as shown at 12, to facilitate the introduction of the twine or thread. Fastened in any suitable manner to the springarm 6 of the supporting-clip and preferably arranged at an angle to the clamping- arms 10 and 11 is a cutting-blade 13, the. cutting edge 14 of which is disposed in the same horizontal plane with said clamping-arms, so that when the thread is introduced between the latter and drawn rearwardly the free end of the thread will be cut or severed, While the opposite end thereof will be -held between the clamping- arms 10 and 11. The cutting-blade 13 is of less length than the thread-holder, and the free end of said blade preferably terminates short of the curved ends 12 of the clamping-arms, so as to permit the thread to be introduced in the holder and clamped between the arms 10 and 11 before engaging the blade.
