Description

W. RHODES.
CUTTING IMPLEMENT.
APPLICATION HLED FEB. I, 1915.
Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
PATENT OFFICE.
WRIGHT RHODES, F MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
CUTTING IMPLEMENT.
caster, England, have invented new and us Improvements in Cutting Implements, of
which the following is 'a specification.
This inventionrelates to a device or appliance for stripping or removing waste from roving: and like'tubes and bobbins.
An exhausted roving tube or bobbin always contains a certain amount of waste roving which is'stripped or removed before the tube or bobbin is used again. When the tube o'r'bobbinfis new the waste can generallybe screwed or twisted off by hand, but if the surfaceof the tube or bobbin is not perfectly smooth it is ofte'n diflicult to screw or twist off the waste and in such cases it is not unusual for the operative to cut off the waste by drawingthe blade of a knife lengthwise along the tube or bobbin. Such cutting off of the waste, however, frequently leads to the cutting and consequent damaging of the tube or bobbin and the object of the present invention is to provide a device or appliance whereby waste which cannot be readily removed by screwing or twisting it off can be cut off without any possibility of cutting and damaging the tube or bobbin.
A device or appliance in accordance with the invention comprises essentially a holder v or carrier provided with or having mounted 35 or arranged on it a prong-like member adapted to be inserted between the tube or bobbin and the waste thereon and adapted to raise the latter clear of the tube or bobbin,
and a cutter adapted to sever the waste when it is raised. 7
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation, 2 a front view, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the preferred form of device or appliance in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the components of the device or appliance detached or separated.
Referring to the drawings the preferred form of device or appliance in accordance with my invention comprises a steel or other suitable holder a provided with a head a in which is fashioned a groove (1 At the front of the holder a is mounted a depending prong b the upper end or shank b of which is bent at right angles and clamped by a v Specification of Letters Patent.

clamping plate andscrew Win the groove a in the top of the holder. The upper end 6 of the prong b is provided with a slot 6 '(Fig. 4) in order to render the prong adjustable as to position infront of the holder The prong I) may, however, be clamped to the holder 0; and be adjustable many other suitable way. The depending part ofthe prong is provided with a comparatively long and narrow slot b? and tapers both in thickness and'widt'h to its lower end. The prong is also provided with guide wings b to assist in maintaining it in position against the tube or bobbin in operation and its front surface is preferably concaved to enable it to better seat against the tube or bobbin.
To the side of'the holder a is clamped a cutter c which consists of a double-edged wafer blade. The cutter is positioned on studs 4 on the side of the holder so that its front cutting edge is inclined and at the top projects beyond the front-of the holder and into, but not through, the slot 6 in the prong b. The cutter c is clamped and the necessary rigidity imparted to the projecting part of its operative cutting edge by a clamping plate al also positioned on said studs a and secured bya screw (1 In use the prong b is inserted between the tube or bobbin and the waste thereon and the device or appliance then drawn smartly lengthwise of the tube or bobbin. As the device or appliance is drawn along the prong b raises the coils or turns of the waste from the surface of the tube or bobbin which are tightened or tensioned as they pass on the upper and larger part of the prong where they are severed by the cutter 0.
Although I prefer a double-edged cutter as aforesaid'which can be changed or adjusted to bring either end of either cutting edge into operation when the other or others is or are dulled, I may employ a singleedged or any other suitable cutter.
As will be obvious, my improved device or appliance may be considerably modified without departing from the nature or spirit of my invention. For example, I may arrange the prong and cutter so that when the device or appliance is in use either it or the tube or bobbin is also turned and the waste is stripped or cut spirally. Further I may at right angles to or at either. or. both sides of the prong.
It will, of course, improved device orappliance is applicable for use only with tubes or bobbinsthatare.
not provided with annular or circumferen tial grooves. V
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is prong-like member projecting from the holder member and having its free end per tion disposed adjacent, to one side of the latter in fixed angular relation thereto,
means by which the said prong-like memberfmay be adjusted relative to the said holder member side without changing the angular relation of the same,;and a cutting blade secured fixedly to one of the said members and disposedso that it bridges the gapbetween members and has its-sharp edge at an oblique angle to one of the latter.
2. A cutting implement of the class described comprising a holder member, a prong- I like member projecting from the holder memher and-havinga pointed free end portion dis-' posed adjacent to oneside of the latter in fixed angular relation thereto, one of said members having a longitudinal slot therem,
anda cutting blade carried by :the other member'and .disposed so that it extends across the gap between members and into be understood that l. A cutting implement of the class described comprising a holder member,- a
thesaid slot with is sharp edgefacing the end ofthe prong-like memben 3. A cutting implement of the class described comprising a holder; a prong-like member disposed contiguous to; the holder, a plurality of studs projecting from the l. A cutting implement ofthe class deholder,a wafer-like cutting blade projecting into said prong-hkemember and havlng a i pluralityofholes adapted to register with the-studs on'the-holder-and receive the'same, a clamping plate removably mounted on the holder and having holes adaptedtoregister with and receive thesaid studsyand means for securingv the saidplatetof the holder. In testimony whereof I ghave signed my two subscribing witnesses. j
