Description

PATENTED FEB. 14, 1905. J. D. FLANIGAN.
WHIP SUPPORTER. 7
APPLIOATION FILED MAY 20, 1904.

PATENT OFFICE.
WHlP-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,442, dated February 14, 1905. Application filed Maya, 1904.. serial 110,208,806.
whip-supporters; and it consists in a device having coils and loops whereby it may be suspended from a nail or other support.
The object of the invention is to provide a convenient support for one or a plurality of whips, so the latter may be suspended by their lashes and thus retained in a perpendicular position when not in use. By thus supporting the whips they will retain their shape and usefulness for a much longer time than if stood on the butt ends of their handles in a corner.
In order that the invention may be fully un-' derstood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents an enlarged perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, showing a plurality of whips suspended therefrom. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the device, taken on line 111 Ill of Fig. 2, showing it in position on a nail.
Fig. 4. is a side elevation showing how the device may be carried on a whip when not in use. Fig, 5 shows a modified form of the device in which the loops are dispensed with.
In said drawings, 1 designates the device, which is preferably composed of resilient material, having right and left coils 2, united by a centrally-disposed loop 3, whereby thedevice may be-hung from a nail. limb of a 7.
tree, or the curtain-button of a buggy. The device is also provided at one end with a loop 4:, from which it may be suspended when desired, and when thus suspended thedevice hangs vertically instead of horizontally, as shown in Fig. 2. The diameter of the coils is preferably of a size to snugly fit the middle portion of a whip whereby the device may be carried when not in use, as shown in Fig.
When it is desired toiuse the device, it is slipped to the upper end of the whip and the lash of the latter is forced between two of the coils preparatory to suspending the device from a suitable support. Coils 2 when in their normal position are arranged close together so they will clamp the lash when the latter is forced between two of said coils.
For private use the device need only have one or two coils, in which instance the loops are dispensed with, as shown in Fig. 5; but the latter are preferable for livery-stable use, where it may be desired to suspend a number of whips from one supporter, in which case the number of coils is increased.
From the above description it is apparent that I have produced a device simple and inexpensive in construction and thoroughly effective for the purpose intended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A whip-supporter having a plurality of coils, and a loop uniting said coils, substantially as shown and described.
2. A whip-supporter having right and left coils, and a loop uniting said coils.
3. A whip-supporter having a plurality of coils for the reception of whip-lashes, and a loop uniting said coils and adapted to engage a nail or other support.
4. A whip-supporter having right and left coils, a loop uniting said coils, and a loop arranged at one end of. one of said coils.
In testimony whereof I'aifiX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES D. FLANIGAN.
