LOUIS F. MGCLURE, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
BUILDING-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 781,844, dated February 7, 1905.
Application filed April 30, 1904. Serial No. 205,738.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatLLoUIs F. FICCLURIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Building Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in building-blocks and walls, my object being to provide blocks of cement or other suitable material of plain or ornamental design and having the appearance of natural stone.
A further object is to provide blocks for the formation of hollow walls possessing great durability and strength and capable of being builtmore cheaply than walls of solid stone, as the blocks are lighter and easier handled.
Other objects of the invention will hereina tier appear, and in order that it may be fully understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in whieh- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a portion of a wall built of my improved blocks. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of a preferred form of block. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a preferred form of cornerblock. Fig. t is a detail perspective view of a corner-block arranged alternately in the courses of the wall with the block shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 1 of the drawings shows a section of wall built of blocks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Block 1 comprises a body portion T. provided at its opposite ends with arms 8, extending at right angles thereto, corresponding in height therewith, and of but one-half the thickness of said body portion. The top and bottomedges ol the latter are provided with longitudinal grooves S and centrally-disposed transverse grooves 9. extending from the rear surface of the body portion to the rear side of grooves 8. 1O designates grooves of but one-half the width of grooves 8, arranged in the horizontal outer corners of arms 8 and communicating with the ends of grooves 8.
Blocks 3 and 4: are sections cut from block 1 while the latter is green in order to avoid the expense of providing special molds for said sections.
Corner-block 5 comprises a body portion 11 l of the same heightand width as the body portion of block 1, arm 12 extending at right angles from one end thereof, and a solid corner portion 13 at its opposite end provided at its inner corner with a recess 14. The top and bottom edges of said corner-block are provided with U-shaped grooves 15, the transverse portions of which extending along the horizontal corners of arms 12 are but one-half the width of the other portions of said grooves. Block 5 is also provided with centrally-disposed transverso grooves ll), extending from the rear surface of body portion 11 to the rear edge of the longitudinal portions l grooves 15.
Corner-block is substantially triangular in plan view and has two vertical faces 17, extending at right angles to each other and communicating with vertical end pm-tions lb of less width than the solid central portion l.) of said block. block 6 is provided at its top and bottom edges with right-angular grooves and inwardly extending transverse grooves 20, communicating with the terminals of grooves 20.
In constructing a wall with the above-dcscribed blocks corner-blocks 5 are laid in every second course with their longitudinal sides extending at right angles to each other, and corner-blocks 6 are laid in each alternate course in order to break joints, and thus add to the stability of the wall. Blocks 2 are then laid with their severed ends abutting against the short side of blocks in order to break joints with blocks 1, arranged in alternate courses with blocks 2 in this portion of the wall. The inner portion of the wall, which of course is erected at the same time as the outer portion just describeil, consists of blocks 1, 3, and -i, the severed end of which latter engages recess let, while the end of its arm 8 abuts against the inner surface of block 2 near the severed end of the latter, so its arm 8 will abut against the inner intermediate surface of block 1, and thus break joints between the inner and outer set of said blocks, as shown in Fig. l. 'hen the blocks are placed in this position, grooves 10 in the abutting arms 8 in the outer set of blocks 1 communicate with grooves 9 on the inner set, while grooves 10 on the latter communicate with grooves 9 on the outer set. The grooves of the blocks I between the outer and inner blocks; and 1 are filled with mortar, which serves as a bond l shaped anchors which engage the grooves in in securing the blocks together, and the inner and outer sections of the wall are further secured together by I-shaped anchors 21, the longitudinal portions of which are embedded in the mortar in grooves 9, 10, and 15 of blocks 1 and 5, respectively, while their transverse portions are embedded in the cement in grooves 8 of blocks 1 and grooves 15 and 20 of the corner- blocks 5 and 6.
Having thus described my invention, wha 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
