PATENT UEETCE.
HOSE-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 781,769, dated February 7, 1905.
Application filed September 1, 1904. Serial No. 222,938.
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. ELLIs, a citizen of the United States. residing at l)es bIoines. in the county of Folk and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Apparel Hose-Supporter, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are to provide an apparel hose-supporter of simple, durable, and inexpensive construction to be applied to apparel-hose and to be capable of being readily attached to or detached from apparel-underwear and to fit the contour of the wearers leg and so arranged that it will firmly support the apparel-hose and yet not impede the circulation of the blood through the wearers leg.
My invention consists in the construction of the means for attaching the supporter to an undergarment and in the combination thereof with the means for attaching the device to apparel-hose, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I shows the complete device in per spective, apart of the elastic cover for one of the undergarment-clamping members broken away to show certain details of construction, and Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of the undergarment-clamping device detached.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the referenee-numeral I is used to indicate an elastic web. At one end of the web is a device for detachably connecting the elastic web with apparel-hose. This device comprises a button member II and a loop member I2, both of the ordinary construction, the elastic web being connected with them in the ordinary way. At the other end of the elastic web is a plate 13, firmly connected to the elastic web and formed with an elongated eye II for purposes hereinafter made clear.
The device for connecting the supporter with an undergarment comprises a flat plate I5, having a tongue I6 turned to position substantiall y parallel with the plate and designed to pass through the elongated eye I-I to thereby pivotally connect the plate with the plate I3. Formed on or fixed to the plate I?) is one of the clamping members of the device for attaching the supporter to an undergarm nt. This part of the device constitutes a stationary jaw IT, which jaw is curved to fit the contour of a wearers leg and is perfectly round in cross-section. Iivoted to one end of the stationary jaw IT is theswinging jaw member, which comprises a rounded central portion IS, formed with shoulders 19 at its ends, one end thereof connected with the jaw IT by the pivotpin 20 and the other end formed with a hook 21. The entire swinging jaw is curved to fit against the curved jaw IT, and mounted upon the rounded portion 18 of this jaw is a flexible tube 22, preferably made of rubber. Pivoted to the free end of the stationary jaw IT is a loop 23, designed to enter the hook 2i when the jaws are close together.
In practical use the supporter is first connected with apparel-hose in the ordinary way. Then a small portion of wearers umlergarment is drawn between the jaws IT and 18. Then the jaw IS is moved toward the jaw IT and the part of the umlergarment is firmly clamped between a rigid metal jaw 17 and a yielding cover 22 of the jaw IS. This yielding cover serves as a spring to hold the jaw IS away from the jaw IT, and hence when the loop 23 is placed in engagement with the hook 21. the garment is clamped between a rigid surface I? and a yielding surface 22, so that the garment cannot slip. I urthermore garments of different thicknesses may he clamped between these jaws, because the cover 22 will yield enough to adapt the jaws to admit undergarments of different thicknesses between them and firmly hold undergarments of any of the ordinary thicknesses of material. In
this way hose is supported by a device which second jaw member formed with shoulders I0 near its ends and a rounded central portion, and a yielding tube mounted upon the rounded central portion.
SAMUEL F. ELLIS.
