SUSPENDER-BUCKLE.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ELrsHA STEELE, of lVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved 'buckle for applicationto Suspenders, all kinds of webbing, and any other purpose to which the same shall be found applicable; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing the tongue or points of the buckle to act and work as a slide in the inside of the buckle frame, instead of a hinge or roller, as in the ordinary buckle, so that upon drawing out the points or tongue and attaching the same to the web and applying the strain, the points slide back into the interior of the buckle thereby firmly attaching the buckle to the web.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The frame or body of the buckle, which may be of any size or shape required I make of two thin pieces of Hat metal, of any kind found suitable, cut or filed out as is well understood- The outer side of the buckle I make as in drawing marked (A) with a rim or edge turned up to close over the under side when put together. The under side of the buckle is cut out the required size to fill the outer sidewith an ear or lip upon one side--to which to attach the buckle to the suspender loops, or other article to which it may be applied-By means of a die I strike up a space in the under plate so that when the two plates are put together there will be a space for the tongue or points of the buckle to slide in-and also make through the plate twoholes to receive the tongue or points as in drawing marked The tongue or points I construct of wire bent and shaped as in drawing marked (C). The tongue or points are then put through the holes in the under plate--the two plates put together and the rim or edge of the outer plate by means of a die is closed over the under and inclosing the tongue or points securely between them as in the drawing marked (D)-but leaving them so as to slide out and play in the space leftby the raised part of the under plate-'- In attaching the buckle to the suspender or web the tongue or points are drawn or slid out of the space between the two plates as in drawing marked the points attached to the web and upon drawing upon the lip or ear on the lower side of the buckle the tongue or `points slide back into the space between the two plates as in drawing marked (E) and become securely attached to the web as in drawing marked (G).
)Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The construction of the buckle frame, and attaching the tongue or points thereby, so that the tongue or points slide out and into the buckle instead of acting upon a hinge or roller, as above described.
