Be it known that we, JOHN RUHL and ELIAL S. HERRINGTON, of Deiiance, in-the county of Defiance, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in vSelf-litaking and Loading Hay-Wagon; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description` thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,whieh form u part of this specication, in whichl i Figure 1 represents 'a side elevation, i

The nature of this invention consists in constructinga wagonfbo'dy with a hay-loading apparatus, substan# -tially in the manner hereinafter set forth.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will` now describe its eonstlihction and operation. f i

R represents a'cyl'inder pivoted'to the ,upperV ends of braces F designates an endless belt, which passes around the cylinders M and R.- At'a proper distance apart, `the slats vo o are fastened laterally on the outer surface of belt F. Said slats are furnished with teeth, for the purpose of taking up thc hay when the belt is in motion. Y

The'operation of my machine is as follows: When the wheels are in motion, Vand the slats are in position, the front. ends of teeth jj will be directly under cylinder M, and as the cylinder rotates and gives motion to the belt F, the teeth on the slats o o will take up the hay when gathered by the teethyj, and carry it up over the cylinder R, from whence it will drop into lthe wagonlbody. When the machine 4is to be moved from one part of the field to another, the teeth jj can be elevated out of the way by the action of the leverV N.

What we claim as' new, ahd desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y The lever N, slide m, -bar L, and rod p, combined, as and for the purpose set forth.
