IM PROVED STU MPE-XTRACTOR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40, 160., dated October 6, 1863. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, D. A. DANFORTH and D. G. PAYNE, of Elkhart, county of Elkhart, and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stump-Extractors for Raising the Stumps and Roots of Trees; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication.
The nature of our invention consists in the arrangement and combination of an adjustable upright frame, with self-adjusting posts on each side, oscillating, as required, upon a pivoted hinge attached to horizontal sills, and a roller at top of the frame, to which are attached self-adjustin g arms operating as levers to raise the stump.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation, as follows A A represent two horizontal sills, rounding in front, so as to be used as a sled for the easy transportation of the machine. Upon these sills we have an upright frame, B, hinged to the sills near the center. This frame B is formed of two side posts, and a cross-bar, C, at top.
0n the front-and back sides of each post B B is a long groove, D, in which a movable and self-adjusting post, E, operates with the frame B, the ends of post E being diminishedv ouehalf the size of the post E, having shoulders cut near each end, so that the end of post may move easily up and down in the groove D of the frame, and also accommodate itself to the short groove G of the sill A, in which the lower end of post E operates back and forward, and is self-adjusting with the movement of the frame B.
Upon the top and at the center of the cross bar C is a strong roller, H, with its axles working in journal-boxes J. To the center of this roller H is iirmly attached the main hoisting-arm K, having a pulley, L, at its outer end, and an adjustable arm, M, at top, operating on a hinge, N. At the extremity of this arm M are three pulleys, P P P. A strong chain or hoisting-cable, B, is attached underneath the arm K, near to the roller H. A cross-bar, S, operates on a pivot, T, on the top of the sills A, in front. To the center of this bar S a block and pulley, U, is attached. f
V are coupling-irons in front, to which horses are hitched when the machine is to be moved.
A strong rope, X, is attached to the block U, and is extended upward and between the upper pulleys P P ofthe arm M, thence around the pulley L of the hoisting-arm K, thence back and between the two lower pulleys P P of the arm M, and from thence to and over the pulley of the block U.
The chain B being linked around a stump, the rope is dragged forward, and the arm K is raised upward, (operating on the roller H,) and hoisting the stump upward until the arms M and K are drawn together on the opposite side of frame B, when the top of frame B then moves forward, and its forward movement drags the loosened stump with it, and carries it away from its original bed, and the stump is easily and quickly extracted, and when the arms M and K are to be moved back again for another operation the frame B is iirst thrown back to its place, and the arm K is held in its horizontal position, and prevented from falling below that position by the rope Y.
To the end of chain R we have a loose ring, Z, (on the chain,) one side being narrower than the other, so that when the end of chain slips into the narrower part it loops and binds itself firmly to the stump.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An upright oscillatin g frame constructed so as to move forward and backward in such a manner that the stump can be removed from its bed by the operation of the forward movement of said frame, and carry the stump with it.
2. In combination with the arms K and M and roller H, the chain B, adapted to the stump by means of the loose ring Z, in the manner and for the purposes herein described.
3. The arrangement and combination of the oscillating upright frame B with its roller H,
adjustable posts E, and arms K and M7 an M, for the purposes of extracting and removranged and combined as herein described, and in g from their beds stumps and trees, in the for the vpurposes set forth. manner and for purposes herein described.
