Description
55mm atmim HARVEY ELEMING, or viENNA, NEW JERSEY. Letters .Patent No. 85,735, dated .Tamm/ry 12, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To-all'whom it ma/y concern.-
Be it known that I, HARVEY FLEMING, of Vienna, in the county of Warren, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Machine for Raising Stones and Stamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to fully understand the same,
- reference being had'to the accompanying drawings,
`engaged in clearing land. Tothis end,
My invention consists in the application to a frame of peculiar construction, and mounted on wheels, of a swingingA derrick, provided with suitable elevating-machinery, as hereinafter more fully described.
In order to enable others so to understand the invention as to be able to construct and use my improved machine, I will now proceed to describe it in detail, referring to the drawing, wherein similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The main carriage-frame of my machine is constructed of two parallel horizontal beams, lettered A A, in the drawings, and transverse beams B B.
This frame is supported at the rear upon the axle C.
D is a tongue, extending from the front of the frame, and resting upon the forward-axle C'.
E is a horizontal beam, supported at the rearupon inclined standards F F, resting on 'the side beams of the lower frame-work, and at the front by similar supports, G G, connected together 'at their bases by a bar, H, supported, though not directly, by the axle C.
A bearing-frame, composed of the parts I I, J K, isv
interposed between the axle G and the bar H, and is rigidly secured to the upper face of the former in any suitable manner.
The part'D ofthe lower frame-work passes between the avle C andthe part K of the bearing-frame, and rests upon the rear cross-piece J- ofthe latter.
A bolt passes through the bar H, bearing-piece K, tongue D, and axle O', connecting them together.
The beam E is braced from the bar H by inclined metallic braces L L.
Metallic rods or bands M M, connected to the beam E, and alsoto the side beams of thelower frame, serve the double purpose of strengthening the former and sustaining the latter.
N O P represent the nsualframe-work of a derrick, supported upon the transverse beam B of the lower frame.
The upright, N, has bearings above and below in the beams B E, so that it may be swung around.
Q represents a drum, which has its bearings iu metallic plates 'qbailixed -to the sides of the derrick, as shown.
This drum is provided with a gear-wheel, fr, theteeth of which engage with those of a pinion (not shown) on the shaft s.
This shaft is prcferablyprovided with a crank-handle at each end.
On the inside ofthe gear-wheel r a ratchet-wheel is keyed to the shaft.
tis a lever-pawl, which engages with the teeth of this ratchet-wheel, and which is pivoted at u to the upper part of the derrick.
c is a metallic frame, fitted on the upper beam of the derrick, and adj ustablethereon, its securing-pin b being passed through a slot, c, in said beam.
Within this frame a, upon one shaft, d, I place several loose and independent grooved pulleys, e.
.f represents a similar set of pulleys, mounted in a U shaped frame, g, and suspended from the upper set, e, by a rope, R, which is partially Wound on the drum Q.
h hare chains, depending from the frame g, and adapted for the application of detachable grapplinghooks@ fi. One of these hooks, detached, is shown in the drawings. As will be seen, they are formed with grooved shoulders on the rear side, which, by catching into the links of the chain, form a secure fastening for the hooks.
In operation, the machine is driven alongside of the 1 stone or stump to be raised. The grappling-hooks are properly attached to the chains, and then caught into the rock or stump. Now, by turning the crank-handles, the rope is wound on the drum, and the stone or stump thereby elevated. lhe del-rick is swung around, so as to enable' the operator to deposit the rock or stump (as shown in red) on a platform, placed across the lower.
frame. The hooks may then be detached.
Its extreme simplicity, and the ease with which it may be operated, are among the prominent recommendations of -my' machine.
Having thus described my invention,
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The frame-work constructed ofthe lower flaming A A, B B', D, inclined uprights F F, Gr G, top beam E, cross-bar H, braces L, and supporting-strap M, all arranged substantially as herein shown and described, when adapted to be mounted on wheels, and also adapted for the support of a derrick, as set forth.
2. In combination with a derrick N O, drum Q, and rope R, the adjustable frame a, with the pulleys e, the suspended frame g, carrying pulleys f, the pendent chains It, and detachable grappling-hooks t', all arranged to operate substantially as herein set forth.
3. The detachable hooks i, formed with shoulders, whereby they are attached to the pendent chains h, substantially' as described and represented. l
The above signed by me, this 18th day of November', 186s.
HARVEY ELEMING.
