Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
FRANCIS SMITH, OF HIGHGA'IE, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN HO RSE-RAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 82,040, dated September 8, 1868.
To all whom t may concern:
-Be it known that I, FRANcIs SMITH, of High gate, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse Hay-Rakes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a side elevation with one wheel removed, and Fig. 2 a plan view of my hay-rake.
The nature of m y invention consists in the employment of a pivoted frame, with metal springs pressing upon the bars of the rake-teeth; and also in the peculiar mode of raising and lowerin g the teeth, substantially in the manner hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the axle-tree, which is provided with wheels C C and shafts B B. D is a cross-brace, secured to the shafts a short distance from the y axle-tree. E E are two uprights, mortised in formed upon the cross-piece b'. The bars c are provided at their lower ends with teeth, and are pivoted to the under side of the axletree by means of the rod d passing through the said bars, and entering pendants e secured to the lower side of the axle-tree. g g are two metal plates, connecting the rake-bars with the cross-piece b'. L is a cylindrical bar, pivoted to the rear side of the axle-tree by means of wire staples l', and is also provided with lever m'. The wires or springs 19 are coiled several times, at their upper ends, around the cylindrical bar N, said ends projecting beyond bar N and entering bar L. The lower ends of the springs p are bent downward, and made of sufficient length to press upon each rake-bar, as seen in Fig. 2.
B, the operators seat, is secured to the axletree by means of a metal spring-plate, f, and is so situated that the levers H and m may be easily operated upon.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' The lever H, belt I, pulleys F and'G, bar b', arms e', and rake-teeth t, in combination with the pivoted bar L, bar N, and fingers p', all constructed, arranged, and operated in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
