GEORGE JOHN SAUER, OE ORlSKA, 'NORTH DAKOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO yEDITH MOORE.
SAltlPlsiE-i-lOLDEFBB SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 780,817, dated January 24, 1905.
Application filed June 25, 1904. Serial No. 214,170.
T0 a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
. Be it known that I, Gnonen JOHN SAunr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Oriska, in the county of Barnes and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sample-Holders; and I do he'reby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to sample-holders, and more particularly to a portfolio or appliance of such character as will enable a plurality7 of samples, as laces, ribbons, embroideries, dress-trimmings, sills, velvets, dress goods, yarn, etc., to be conveniently and readily displayed and at the same time protected against becoming soiled or being subjected to fading effect by strong light while not in use; and my invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the preferred form whereofwill be hereinafter clearly set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, and in which- Figure l shows a plan View of my sampleholder with a variety of samples secured in position thereon. Eig. 2 is a similar view vshowing the reverse side of said holder with a portion thereof broken away to show the manner of securing the samples to the holder,
while Eig. 3 shows a longitudinal sectionalV view of the holder and samples thereon.
Brieiiy stated, my'invention consists in providing a receptacle comprising, essentially,
two preferably oblong members made of any,
desired material and hinged together at one end, whereby they may be opened endwise, so that the samples of laces may be wrapped around one of said members and the overlapped'ends secured and placed out of sight by closing the other member thereon.
For convenience of reference to the details of my invention and cooperating accessories numerals will be employed, the same numeral applying to a similar part throughout the several views.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 designates the main or body portion of my "necessary to constitute said members a and 5,
and therefore when the members l and 2 are brought together they will be temporarily locked in union and may be readily separated, as desired.
In some instances ll form the lid member 2 in two parts, said parts being hinged together, as designated by the numeral 6, and it therefore follows that only the outer end of the member 2 may be moved away from the member l, or the twosections'constituting said member 2 may be moved away if it is desired to gain access to the inner overlapped ends of .the samples, which latter are deslgnated'by the numeral 7.
In Fig. 2 it will be seen that-the overlapped ends of the samples 7 are temporarily secured together, as bya common pin 8,-and when the lid member2 is secured down upon said overlapped ends the pins securing the ends of the samples together will be entirely hidden from View, leavinga complete section of the sample exposed to view upon the outer side of the body portion 1, as shown in Figs. l and 3.
lNhen not in use, my improved sampleholder may be placed in any suitable receptacle or case provided therefor or may be carefully wrapped with paper until again required for use. Y
If deemed desirable, `a suitable clasp 9 may be hinged to the member l near its outer end and adapted to swing over or in engagement with the free end of the member 2, thereby holding the same in locked relationship provided the outer locking devices a and 5 are not employed.
The various parts of my invention may be cheaply and expeditiously made of any preferred material and assembled together each in its respective place, and While I have described the preferred combination and construction of parts I desire to comprehend in this application all substitutes and equivalents that may be considered as falling fairly Within the scope of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isw
The herein-described sample-carrier comprising a pair of members hinged together and forming the body portion and a lid member l and 2, respectively, said body portion being adapted to have a section of a sample of merchandise Wrapped around the same and the ends of said samples secured on the inner side of said body portion in any prclcrrcd way leaving a smooth continuous section oi said sample displayed upon the outer side of the body portion; suitable hinges for holding the members l and 2 together and locking dcvices comprising a plurality of projections carried by the body portion and adapted to enter suitable recesses in the lid-section, all combined substantially as spcciiied and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed 1n y naine to this specilication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
GEORGE JOHN SAUER.
