This invention has for its objects to provide a simple and inexpensive device especially adapted for freight-car doors and which willv permit the door to'be securely locked entirely closed or slightly open for ventilating purposes.

To the accomplishment of these objects and such others as may hereinafter appear the in,-

- vention consists of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,

- in which the same reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings by reference-letters, a designates the main plate of the hasp, which at its inner end is provided with a hole for loose engagement with a'staple Z), fastened to theouter face of the car-door. This staple has one of its shanks fastened to the center of a plate 0, provided with screw-holes, andits other shank extended beyond said plate 0 and sharpened, so that in fastening it to the door this sharpened shank is first driven intothe door until the plate 0 bears against the faceof the same, and then suitable screws are inserted through the openings in the plate. This staple provides a simple and secure fastening device for the hasp, and this construction I prefer; but it is obvious that any other suitable device may be employed for this purpose Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Near the free end of the plate a it is provided with two transverse slots 0Z, one being located nearer the end of the plate than the other, and between the innermost slot and the fastened end the plate is provided on its front face with a headed pin a. At a point directly below the pin 6 the plate is provided with a horizontally-projecting eye or loop f.

Slidi'ngly mounted on the front face of the main plate a is a supplemental plate 9, which at its lower edge is provided with an outwardextending loop eye it, corresponding with through a longitudinal slot formed centrally of the plate, this slot being'closed at its ends,

so that the supplemental plate shall be permanently attached to the main plate. Beyond the slott' and in alinement therewith is another longitudinal slot 7', which is approximately long enough to reach from one ofthe slots d to the other and which at its middle is widened by notches in, formed in its opposite edges.

For convenience in manipulating this slidable' plate it is providedat one'end with an outturned thumb-piece Z.

Attached permanently to the frame of the car adjacent to the door-opening and in line with the staple b is a plate m, projecting from the face of which is a headed pin or lug n,

whose head is vertically elongated so that it may pass freely through slots (Z and the widened part of slot j.

In fastening the door entirely closed, as in Fig. 1, the hasp is adjusted so that the head of pin or shall pass through the inner slot 0?.

, register and may be removed therefrom when the door is to be unfastened. The lower end of the bolt, which depends below the lower loop f, is provided with a transverse hole, through which the seal-wire may pass to seal the door and prevent the bolt being withdrawn from the loops without breaking the seal. When this sealing-bolt is not to be used, it may be swung to one side out of the way, as is evident.

When the door is to be fastened partly open for the purpose of ventilating the car, the pin a is passed through the outer slot (Z, the supplemental plate first having been slid. outward far enough to bring its notches k to register with said slot. Then the plate g is slid inward until the outer end of slot 7' strikes against the shank of pin a, in which position the loops f and It will register.

It will be observed that this device may be employed for other purposes than for locking car-doors; so I do not wish to be confined in the use of the device. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various mechanical embodiments of the invention are possible, and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact arrangement and construction shown.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a main plate and means for fastening one end of it, said plate being provided on its face with a headed pin and beyond the pin with a pair of transverse slots, one of the slots being nearer to the end of the plate than the other, said plate being also provided with an outward-extendingeye or loop, a supplemental plate slidingly mounted on said main plate and provided with an outward-extending loop or eye adapted to register with the loop on the main plate and also with a longitudinal slot near its outer end which slot is widened midway its length and is adapted to register with either of the transverse slots in the main plate, and a device adapted to be secured. to the structure adjacent to the door and provided with a vertical elongated head adapted to pass through either of said transverse slots and the widened part of the slot in the supplemental plate, for the purposes set forth.

2. In adevice of the character described, the combination of a main plate and means for fastening one of its ends to the door, its other end being provided with a pair of transverse slots, one being nearer the free end of the plate than the other, a headed pin or bolt adapted to be fastened to the structure adjacent the door-opening and adapted to pass through either one of said slots, and means on the plate for locking said headed pin or bolt in either of said slots, for the purposes set forth.

3. In adevice of the character described, the combination of a main plate adapted at one end to be attached to the door and at its other end provided with an opening, a pin or bolt adapted to be attached to the structure adjacent the door and to pass through said opening, a sliding supplemental locking-plate on the main plate, both plates being provided with loops adapted to lie adjacent each other when the supplemental plate is in its locked position, and means for sealing or locking the two plates together consisting of a verticallysliding bolt pivotally depending from the device and adapted to extend down through the aforesaid loops.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a main plate adapted at one end to be attached to the door and atits other end provided with an opening, a pin or bolt adapted to be attached to the structure adjacent the door and to pass through said opening, a sliding supplemental locking-plate on the main plate, both plates being provided with loops adapted to lie adjacent each other when the supplemental plate is in its locked position, and a verticallyn1ovable scalingbolt attached to the device at a point above the loops and adapted to pass down through the loops to lock the device and to be withdrawn therefrom to unlock the device.

5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a main plate and means for fastening one end of it, said plate being provided on its face with a headed pin and beyond the pin with a pair of transverse slots one of the slots being nearer to the end of the plate than the other, said plate being also provided with an outward-extending eye or loop, a supplemental plate slidingly mounted on said main plate and provided with an outwardextending loop or eye, adapted to lie adjacent to the loop on the main plate, and also with a pair of longitudinal slots, one being widened at a point in its length and adapted to register with either of the transverse slots in the main plate, a pin passing through the latter slot and into the main plate, and a device adapted to be secured to the structure adjacent to the door and provided with a vertical elongated head adapted to pass through either of said transverse slots and the widened part of the slot in the supplemental plate, for the purposes set forth.

6. Inadevice of the characterdescribed, the combination of a main plate and means for fastening one of its ends to the door, its other end being provided with a pair of openings, one being nearer the free end of the plate than the other, a headed pin or bolt adapted to be fastened to the structure adjacent the door-opening and adapted to pass through either one of'said openings, and means on the.

plate for locking said headed pin or bolt in either of said slots, said means consisting of a supplemental plate attached to the main plate and havinga limited sliding movement thereon. v i

7. In a device of the character described, the combination of a main plate and means for attaching one end to a door, said plate being provided at its free end with an opening, a pin or bolt adapted to be secured to the frame of the structure-adjacent the door-opening and to pass through the opening in the plate, a

sliding supplemental locking-plate on the main plate, and means for locking these two plates together, said means consisting of a.

pair of loops carried one by the main plate and the other by the supplemental plate, and

a device for passing through these loops and locking them against movement with respect to each other.

8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a main plate adapted at one end to be attachedto the door and at its other end provided with an opening, a pin or bolt adapted to be attached to the structure adjacent the door and to pass through said open-- ing, a sliding supplemental locking-plate on the main plate, both plates being provided with loops adapted to lie adjacent each other when the supplemental plate is in its locked position, and a vertically sliding lockingbolt carried by the main plate and depending through said loops, for the purpose set forth.

9. In a device of the character described, the combination of a main plate adapted at one end to be attached to the door and at its other end provided with an'opening, a pin adapted to be attached to the structure adjacent the door and to passthrough said opening, a supplemental locking-plate provided with a longitudinal slot, a headed pin passing through said slot and into the main plate to thereby-
