BARB WIRE FENCE.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 11, 1904.
Affari/ej- UNITED STATES Patented January 10, 1905.
FRANK O. MOSIER, OF WEST PITTSTON BOROUGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
BARE-WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 779,616, dated January 10, 1905. Application filed July 11, 1904. Serial No. 216,032.
T0 @ZZ whom, it nur/y 00u/cern:
Be it known that I FRANK O. MOSIER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Vliest Pittston borough, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barb- VVire Fences; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it `appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the ligures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to barbed-wire fences, and has for its object to provide a barbed wire which can be conveniently handled and can be applied to a fence in a simple and efficient manner.
A further-object of my invention is to provide a barbed wire which can be stretched in the same manner as a simple wire and which can be passed through the fence-posts, thus obviating the usual stapling and providing a fenflze which is exceptionally strong and durab e.
With these objects in view my invention consists in providing a wire formed spirally and provided with barbs thereon, said spiral barbed wire being passed over a simple straight wire, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing a p0rtion of the spiral barbed wire in the act of being passed over the simple straight wire. Fig. 2 is a view showing two fence-posts and illustrating the manner of aiixing the wire thereon, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken through the wire.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several iigures, in whichl indicates the simple straight Wire, which may be of any suitable metal and of any desired diameter.-
2 indicates the coiled wire provided with the barbs 3, which coiled wire is passed over the simple straight wire, as shown in Fig. l.
Having thus fully described the several parts of my invention, its operation is as follows: Referring to Fig. Q, in which 4 indicates the fence-posts, it will be seen that the straight wire l is passed directly through the said posts and is not stapled thereon. In aiiixing this wire to a fence the spiral barbed wire is cut in lengths corresponding to the spaces between the fence-posts 4f and the straight wire is passed through one of said posts and a section of the spiral barbed wire is slipped over the straight wire. The end of the straight wire is then passed through the next post and the wire is stretched to the desired degree. .Another section of the spiral barbed wire is then passed over the straight wire and the end of the straight wire is again carried through the succeeding post, and so on until the fence is complete.
Having thus described the several parts of my invention, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction as herein set forth, as various slight changes may be made therein which would fall within the limit and scope of my invention, and I consider myself clearly entitled to all such changes and modications.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to 'secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
A barbed wire for the purpose described, comprising a straight wire, a iexihle round spiral wire provided with a series of barbs tied thereon, said round spiral wire being passed over said straight wire and adapted to be yieldingly and loosely carried on said straight Wire, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afx my signatu re in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK O. MOSIER.
