To ALL'WHOM ITMAYeoNcERN; i
Be it known that I, GODFREY WIDMER, of thecity,4 countyand State of New York,.have invented a new andimproved Adjustable Couch andI do hereby declare that the following is'a full, clear, andexact description thereof, which will enahiefotheis skilled in .theartto make and usc thesnme, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisispecification, in whichl V{figur-e1 represents a longitudinal vertical' section'lofmy improved couch, theplane section being indicated by the line :c cr, fig. 3.
Figure 2 is a similar view of thoflsamqshovving the head-rest inA adii'erent position. Figure 3 is an invertedplanviewof the same. i v Vl'igufre 4 is a detail vertical transverse section ofthe same, takenron tle plane ofthe line y y, iig. 2. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention `relates tol a new couch/whichjis provided with an'adjustnble -hend-res`t, so that it can be adapted to any desired positionv of the body. Y
The invention consistsvof a longitudinally and transverselyadjustable frame, upon which a sheet of canvasV or other fabric is stretched, and of a frame, swinging within a xed'fraine,'and` projectinghbove the same, so
as to elevate the canvas, and to form the headrestof the' coucl1 `.l
' 4The swinging frame 'is eccentric, so that by turning it, the head-rest will be raised moreor less.
lhisinvention is particularly adapted to he used during the summer season, and in southern climates, alsthe stretched sheet oi' canvas formsan elastic and strong bottom, under which,.owing.to the absence of supporting springs o1" laths, a. current of fresh air can freely pass.
A, in Vthe drawing, represents a, rectangular or other frame, made of wood o'i other suitable material, of
suitable dimensions. In the foot-end ofthe same isarranged, through slots, a cross-bar or rod, B, on the ends' of which screw-threads are arranged, 'as shown. i C C are longitudinal rods or lhars, screwed, at the upper end, into upr'ights a a. of the frame, and iitted 'with their lower ends, on which eyes nre arranged, ovcr the ends of the rod B, respectively, as is. clearly shown in fig. 3. v V
By'means of nuts I1 b', on the rodB,'the rodsrC ,canho adjusted any suitable distance apart, and by screwn ing the rods C'inore orless into theuprights a, the har B can he moved in the slots in whichit rests.
In the frame is, near the head-end ofthe same, pivoteda turning-frameD, which consists of two arms l or plates, e @,-pivoted tothe opposite sides of the frame A, bymeaiis of pins d d, that are in line with each other. The arms c are connected with each other by means of a bar, e, and carry each an eccentriolor-oval wire ring, E, as is clearly shown in vthe drawings. Y
-.F is the canvas orfo'ther sheet, which forms the bott-om of my couch. The sides of this sheet, as well as 'ite `ends, are hom'med, and the sides are fitted around the rods C, and partly around the rings E, as shown inrfigs. 1 and 2, while the lower `encl isv fastened around the `barhl, and theupper end, 4beyond the rings E, is
passedundera fixed' rod, G, and fastened to 'aba.r, VH, which is, bymeans of screws ff,radjustuble towards and connected'with the upper cross-.harof'tho frame l f Byrmeans of the screwsf the canvas can be stretched lengthwise, and by means of the nuts IJ, transversely:
By vbeing fastened to the rings the canvas israised at the headof the frame, vsous toform the heads" rest ofthe couch; and'by turning the saidl rings around the axl'es d, .the head-rest can he raised. or lowered at A will, as isclearly indicated in gs. 1 and the latter figure' showing the head-rest as high, and the formeras `low as it can he set.
To hold theicanvas down in front of the head-1-est,'a'strap, I, is i'astened to its under side, and secured to across-bar, g,.of the frame A, as shown.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
T1. `.A couoh, consisting of a. cariva or otherA sheet, F5 which-ie tied over an adjustable frame, B CH, s o
that it qzm be stretchedjn either direction, -as sei forth.' I' 2. The ecceutric-rings E Ez'w'hen .arranged as described, so that they serve to elei'ate-thesheet F, to form the head-pest of the couh, whensm'd rings are adjustable around a co'hmmon axis; asset fortvh. v
43. The strapI, rranged on the under side ofthe sheet Elin freni of timv head-rest, substantiuliy as andV14 for the purpose' herein shown and deseribedg GODFREY AWIDMEIL Wipnesseazr WM.- F'. MCNAMARA, ALEX. F. ROBERTS.'
