JAMES C. GABLE, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOBACCO-SMOKING PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 77,948, dated December 20, 1904.
Application filed February 12 1903. Serial No. 143,018.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. GABLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Tobacco-Smoking Pipe; and I do hereby'declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in a tobacco-smoking pipe of that class in which the smoke-passage is serpentine through the stem and tortuous through the head or mouthpiece end thereof, forming a trap therein.
The object of the invention is manifoldnamely, to prevent the saliva from the mouth from entering the stem and therethrough the pipe-bowl; to prevent the free nicotin, tobacco-dust, and ashes from the bowl from entering the mouth; to materially cool the smoke therethrough, and the stem, With the mouthpiece thus constructed, may also be used for inhaling medicated fumes or vapors, preventing foreign substances or unconsumed particles from entering the lungs.
The elements of the invention Will severally and at large appear in the following description, and they will be separately or combinedly set forth or pointed out in the appended claim or claims.
The purposes of the invention are attained by the devices and means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, similar reference characters designating like parts throughout the several views, in Which Figure 1 is a longitudinal central vertical section of a tobacco-smoking pipe having a stem and mouthpiece embodying the elements of the invention With detached views, showing the outer end of the mouthpiece and a disk both in direct elevation; and Figs. 2, 3, L, 5, 6, and 7 are views in end elevation and longitudinal central vertical section of mouthpieces having modified forms of the tortuous passage or vent therein and seated in the stem end, with Fig. 5 showing also an inverted plan of said stem end.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the head or bowl of an ordinary tobaccosmoking pipe having aneck 2 at a right angle therewith. In the bowl is formed a tobaccoreceptacle or combustion-chamber 3, havmg at the lower end thereof a bore or vent 4, extending axially through the neck, and in the outer end thereof is formed a stem-seating socket 5, while to said end is secured a covering-cap 6, with a tubular casing 7 sleeved thereon. These several parts, forming no part of the invention, are only here introduced and mentioned'as the parts to which the elements of the invention are applied.
In the construction of the stern of the invention a tubular body A of any approved shape in circumferential contour is provided throughout its length with a plane, but preferably cylindrical, axial bore a, considerably larger in diametrical area than is the vent i, from the combustion-chamber through the neck, the bore being made plane or smooth, so as to be readily cleansed. Within this bore are arranged and seated at prescribed intervals a plurality of disks A, preferably of a pith-like substance, having in their per pheral edges U or V shaped notches a, said disks being so placed that said notches in the alternate ones will be adjacent to the top or bottom surface of said bore, making therethrough a continuous, butserpentine, passage-way, (1ndicat ed by the arrows 1,) with the forward end a of the tube firmly seated in the socket 5 of the neck, while the other or free end a" is adapted to have inserted thereinto the plug end of the mouthpiece of the invention and yet to be described. Into the outer or free end of the stem A is secured a mouthpiece B of any approved material, somewhat oval or elliptic in rear end contour and forwardly reduced to correspond with the circumferential contour of this end of the stem, having at a 7 this projects forwardly a prescribed lug or plug 1), which is inserted into said stem end. VVithin this mouthpiece and extending from end to end thereof is formed the tortuous passage- Way or vent of the invention, which vent in this instance is horizontally widened and outwardly flared at its rearward end 6 which opens into the mouth, allowing the smoke to spread accordingly, and thereby prevent its stinging or pricking contact with the tongue, thence forwardly downward a prescribed distance, forming the lower crook b thence rearwardly upward, forming the upper crook b", thence forwardly downward to about the center, forming the axial bend Z), and thence axially forward through the forward end of the plug, thus completing one-the preferred-form of the tortuous passage-way of the invention through the mouthpiece end thereof; but to the rear end of said stem may be secured in a similar manner mouthpieces provided with ,various modifications of the tortuous passage-way or vent without in any way changing the character or departing from the spirit of the invention.
Fig. 2 shows a mouthpiece C, with a surrounding olfset or shoulder c and a forwardlyprojecting lug or plug 0, which is inserted into the stem end a said plug having in its top surface a U or V shaped groove 0 extending longitudinally rearward a prescribed distance from the forward end thereof, forming an angular crook c thence forwardly downward a prescribed distance, forming an angular crook c", thence longitudinally rearward and out through the rear end of the mouthpiece, where the vent is provided with a widened and outwardly-flared open end a, being similar to the vent-opening 6 before mentioned.
Fig. 3 shows a mouthpiece D, with a surrounding offset or shoulder (Z and a forwardlyprojecting lug or plug (Z inserted into said stem end 0), said plug having formed in its body a circumferential groove or recess (Z forming a passage-way around the plug, having in the top edge of the forward portion of the plug a longitudinal groove or channel (Z but not as deep as said groove (Z having a bore (if longitudinally through the rearward portion of the plug and opening into said groove 45 practically mid way between its top and bottom in the upper portion thereof, thence downwardly rearward a prescribed distance, forming the crook (Z thence horizontally out through the rear end of the mouthpiece below the center thereof, where the vent is provided with a widened and outwardlyflared open end cl, also similar to the ventopening 6 before mentioned. 7
Fig. 4 shows a mouthpiece E, with a surrounding shoulder or offset a and a forwardlyprojecting lug or plug a inserted into said stem end a", said plug having a circumferential groove 0 around its body, with a longitudinal channel 0 inthe top edge of the forward portion thereof and with vents 0 opening into said groove 6 in the rearward portion thereof, both vents extending therethrough, the upper one,
a, above the center, slightly downwardly and rearwardly inclining and the lower one, a", below the center and open through the under side of the plug, the former having a widened an d outwardly-flaring rearward end a and the latter a similar rearward end 0 Fig. 5 shows a mouthpiece F, with a surrounding offset or shoulderfand a forwardlyprojecting plug or lugf inserted into said stem end a said lug having in its top surface from the forward end thereof a longitudinal slot or groove f extending rearward a prescribed distance, forming at that point an acutangular crookf, thence forwardly downward through the lug, where its lower end f is open and registers with a slot (0, formed in the under side of the stem, which slot extends through the rearward end of said stem and registerswith a widened and outwardly-flared recess f", formed in the lower edge of the mouthpiece.
Fig. 6 shows a mouthpiece G, with a surrounding offset or shoulder g and a forwardlyprojecting lug or plug g inserted into said stem end (0 said plug having opening through its front end near the top thereof the end 9 of the vent, which extending downwardly rearward a prescribed distance forms at that point an acutangular crook g thence downwardly forward with its lower end 1* opening through the bottom of the mouthpiece, and which end of the vent may also be outwardly widened or flared; but this flared end is not shown in the drawings.
Fig. 7 shows a mouthpiece H, with a surrounding offset or shoulder h and a forwardlyprojecting lug or plug 72/, inserted into said stem end a", said plug having formed in its convex or cylindrical surface a U or V shaped groove 72 winding therearound in the form of a screw-thread having a prescribed pitch with its forward end if opening into the stem at or near the top of the plug, and its other or rearward end it at the bottom thereof forming an angular crook if, thence horizontally rearward through the outer end wall of the mouthpiece, where the outer end it is widened and outwardly flared.
It will here be remarked that the vent thus described and shown in the several modifications thereof forms in each a very tortuous passage-way through the mouthpiece, constituting a trap therein that will practically prevent any saliva from the mouth from entering the stem, and that the several mouthpieces may be readily withdrawn from their respective stems and separately cleansed and again readily placed in position.
The invention having thus been ascertained and described and the manner in which it is performed fully shown and set forth, what is considered new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a bowl having a neck formed with a bore, and a stem-socket of greater diameter than said bore, a tubular body projecting into said socket and having an interior of uniform diameter which is greater than that of said bore, a plurality of removable apertured disks arranged in said body with their apertures out of alinement, and a removable plug arranged in the outer end of said body, said plug being formed with a tortuous passage having its inner end out of alinement with the opening of the adjacent disk. 1
2. In combination with a bowl having a neck formed with a bore, a tubular body secured to said neck and having an interior of greater diameter than the bore of said neck, a plurality of apertured disks arranged in said body with their apertures out of alinement, and a removable plug mounted in the outer end of said body, said plug being formed with a pas- JAMES C.
