To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS KIRTLAND YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whitehall, in the county of Greene and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate Construetions; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to gate constructions, and more particularly to a gate of that variety which the operator may easily open from either side thereof by simply pulling upon a cable, rope, wire, or the like properly mounted in a convenient place; and my invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the preferred form whereof will be hereinafter clearly set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
The prime object of my invention, among others, is to provide a gate of the character specified the parts of which are few in number and of very simple, and consequently cheap, construction.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in whieh-- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my gate complete ready for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved gate, showing the same in an open position, the gate in this position being disposed at right angles to the position indicated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail View showing a top plan of the gate-controlling arm and the Weight carried thereby. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the preferable form of hinge to be employed in connection with my improved gate. Fig. 5 is a side view of the controlling-arm shown in Fig. 3 and the weight carried thereby.
For convenience of reference to the various details and cooperating accessories numerals will be employed, the same numeral applying to a similar part throughout the several views.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 designates the main fence-post, and
2 the cooperating post, the former post being the one to which the gate is hinged, preferably in the manner illustrated in Fig. 4, while the post 2 carries the keeper 3, cooperating with the gate-latch.
The gate proper is made up in any preferred way, as by a plurality of horizontallydisposed sections or bars 4:, properly connected together and held in permanent relationship by the end sections 5 and (Sand an intermediate section or pair of uprights 7 and 8, the latter being designed for the attachment of the bracket 9 and also for the upper end of the bracing member 10 to bear against, the lower end of said bracing member being fitted into a recess formed near the lower end of the end section 5, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Near the main or hinge post 1 I erect the independent post 11, which carries the arm or bracket 12 and to which is pivotally secured, by means of the bearing-plate 13, the controlling-arm, illustrated in detail in Fig. 3 and comprising the parallel sections 14: and 15, united together by the rod-like member or cylindrical section 16, the latter being designed to cooperate with the bearing-plate 13, whereby the sections 141 and 15 may be freely raised and lowered incident to the control of the gate, as hereinafter clearly set forth. The arm 15 is provided with an apertured ear or terminal section 17, to which the ends of the controlling- cables 18 and 19 are attached, said cables being extended upward through the pulleys 20, carried by the arm or bracket 12, and thence directed outward over the pulleys 21 upon the out posts 22 and 23. The cables 18 and 19 are provided with the controlling-handles 24c, and it is obvious that by pulling upon said handles the arm .15 will be elevated, incidentally raising the arm 14:.
Upon the lower side and near the end of they arm .lt 1 form the apertured ear 25, and cooperating with said ear is the apertured end 26 of the auxiliary arm 2'7, the latter being provided with a shoulder 28 to abut against the end of the arm 14:, whereby the arms 14 and 28 cannot move downward out of a horizontal plane, but are left free to be drawn upward by the controlling-cables 18 01-19, as the case may be. The end of the auxiliary arm 27 is pivotally connected to the gate, as by means of the eyebolt 29, entered in one of the bars 4: or the bracing-section 10, and it will be clearly apparent that by drawing upon either of the handles 2 1 the gate will be drawn into an open position. In order that the gate-latch may also be released at the instant the pull is made upon the controlling-handle 24, I pivot the latch 30 to some convenient point of the gate, as upon the upright 8, the end of the latch being of suflicient length to reach against the post 2 and under the keeper 3, carried by said post, it being understood that the free end of the latch 30 shall be circumscribed in its movement by some suitable means, as the bracket 31.
It will be observed that the keeper 3 consists of a main portion driven into the post 2 and a downwardly-extending terminal behind which the free end of the latch 30 is disposed when the gate .is in a closed position, and therefore accomplish this control of the latch by means of the auxiliary cable 32, which is connected to the latch in any preferred way, as by the staple 33, and is then passed over the pulleys 3 1 and 35 and thence extended clownward into connection with the auxiliary arm 27, as by passing the end of the cable through the aperture 36. Obviously a pull upon either of the controlling- cables 18 or 19, as the case may be,will draw the arm 15 upward and swing the gate in an open position and incidentally elevate that portion of the auxiliary arm 27 to which the auxiliary cable 32 is attached sufiiciently to release the latch 30 and permit it to drop downward below the end of the angular terminal of the latch when the gate is free to swing open.
It will be observed that I haveprovided an adj ustably-mounted weight 37 for the arm 14, said weight being so formed that by means of the set-screw 38 ready adjustment may be obtained.
The arms 14 and 15 and their connecting portion are substantially U-shaped in form, this construction being desirable and important in order that said arms may be swung backward past the auxiliary post 11 during the opening of the gate, the weight 37 being designed to serve the purpose of moving the arms past the dead-center or their pivotal point of union with the bearing-plate 13. When the gate is moved into an open position, the arms 1 1 and 15 will therefore be raised upward and moved past the auxiliary post 11, thusinsuring that the gate cannot casually pass into a closed position, inasmuch as a sharp pull upon one of the controlling-handles will be absolutely necessary before the arms 1 1 and 15 are again raised into a vertical position, when the impetus of movement due to the weight carried by the arm 14 will move the dead-center and insure that the gate will be closed. It will thus be seen that my imthe arms past,
proved gate can be easily disposed in an open or closed position from either side thereof without necessitating that the operator shall dismount or leave the vehicle.
The gate is hung to the post 1 by suitable hinges, said hinges comprising eyebolts 39, which take into the post 1, and elongated staples 10, which take into the end section 5 of the gate proper. By having a hinge of this construction the gate may be bodily elevated and secured in its elevated position by means of a pin 13, which takes through a suitable opening in the staple 1O, as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. When it is desired to elevate the gate, the pin 13 is removed anc the gate raised until the opening in the staple 4:0 is elevated above the eyebolt 39, when said pin is again inserted and the gate retained in its elevated position.
In Fig. 1 I have shown a special form of hinge which will be found very desirable'and 'eiiicient when it is desired to hold the gate in an elevated position, so that swine and other small animals may pass under without the necessity of opening the gate. In the special form of hinge herein illustrated the pin 43 .is dispensed with and the upper staple 1O provided at its upper end with the outwardly-directed loop or bend 11, and it is obvious that by bodily raising the gate so that the eyebolt will rest upon the shoulder or offset 42 the gate will be supported by said ofiset or shoulder at a proper height to permit the passage of swine and other stock and that after such passage the gate may again be lowered to its normal position.
In order to more securely retain the eyebolt 39 within the loop 11 in the upper staple, the loop &1 in the lower staple 10 is bent in the opposite direction, whereby the free end or the gate will be slightly lowered, and thus more readily dispose the eyebolt 39 within the loop 41 in the upper staple.
The various parts of my invention may be made any desired size and of any suitable material deemed best adapted for the purpose, and while I have described the preferred combination and construction of parts I desire to comprehend in this application all substantial equivalents and substitutes which may be considered as falling fairly within the scope of my invention.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
